I'm going down to bare metal. Theres like 3 layers of base in some areas just wanna get it all stripped down. Would 220 work fine or like a 280.

if your goin down to metal maybe 180 would work a little bit quicker and not fuck up the metal

personally, i'd use 80 on a mudhog or chemical stripper.

80 grit. then when your done, use 180 then prime it. you dont have to 180 it to prime it, but i like it being smoother

And don't forget that you should spray an etching primer like variprime over the metal before regular primer....

u dont have to long as you prime it right after you sanded it... aslong as your going to paint it of course. if not i would etch primer it.

you really dont want to prime OR bondo over scratches deeper than 180 because most of the time you will end up with them shrinking in over time with courser scratches. and unles you are using a self etching primer..you need to etch before you prime regardless of how soon you prime it..corrision starts instantly even though u cant see it. etch not only is a corrosion preventative..but it is also what you need to get your primer or sealer to stick to that bare metal, the acid "etches" the metal to create a better surface for the topcoats to adhere to, the bare metal itself is not the best for things to adhere to it... thats my ten cents....
