I'm hoping to take a welding class next semester but would like to know what kind of welding class i should take to learn how to shave door handles and things like that.

no class is gonna teach that. you just have to goto class to mig weld. and normally in there you'd learn to weld thin metal and thicker metal.. you go from there. there is no calss to be custom or fabricator, its all inside of you.

I dont know about welding classes but i know body shop classes shows you the basics on welding sheetmetal and you will learn how to play with filler and paint.

you either got it or you dont you cant teach a someone how to fabricate. yuo should take a mig class.

all this your born with it bullshit is exactly that. no one was born knowing how to tig weld cut and fit pipe bend pipe it was all learned!!!!! people on this site just love to discourage people. when most of those people own pos that i would never deem road worthy. just got to school to learn the basics or find someone that knows what they are doing and practice practice practice. and start out small and basic and move up from there

i agree it is all self taught a class will just help get on your feet and your adventure of training yourself...i started with out a class and learned to mig weld and oxy/acetlyn weld from prior jobs...i then went to school and learned better skills on mig welding and finally got to tig weld and turns out i am a prestigous tig welder. but a class will only get you started...after that it is up to you to advance....there is a school in cali called wizards fabrication that i have heard is not too expensive and mostly all welding...plus wyotech teachs some great skills on welding in street rod and chassis fab.

Sorry but its not bullshit. You can teach someone how to weld, teach them how to use a plasma, tell them to build you a trailer, or even cut you pieces for a sheetmetal bed and if they cant be creative enough to design something and put it to life, then they cant fabricate. Fab work is all creativity and how you put your ideas to action.

Practice all day long, i know ppl who have been trying to fab for 10 years and cant fab simple things, b/c they just dont have what it takes.

i'm not trying to discourage him, but just letting him know, there is NO class that says 'this is how you make an s10 filler for the door and this is how you putt he contour to it. Tomorrow we are going to build taillight fillers for a tacoma'.. that shit isnt taughtl ikehe went.. he needs a mig class and go from there, if he cant get it down or get it right, then he doesnt have what it takes to fab.. period... try and take classes and do all you can, but dont expect a class to teach you how to fab.

i agree, a class can only show you so much, then the rest is up to you to just get out and try real world projects to get experience. it's all just about how serious you want to take it and practice alot so you're confident doing whatever you need to do. good luck and keep us all updated

yeah i agree, i also encourage you to jump into a class, the class will teach you proper technique, machine settings, machine maintenance and it teaches you how to properly penetrate the material so that you dont burn through or that you dont penetrate at all.... very important stuff.... but it all boils down to practice practice practice, dont let any of these egotistical half wits convince you that welding is in your blood! its an art, a trade, a skill! THAT YOU LEARN!

Just get a bunch of scrap metal... and go at it.. Trial and error is the best way to learn..
