trial and error is the way to go aslong as he knows the basics at to what a good weld is. if he doesnot know that then he will be trialing and erroring for a long time...he needs some guidance then he can trial and error.....

Maybe I should have made myself more clear. I was basically wanting to know what kind of welding class (mig, tig, arc etc..) that I could learn how to do, SO that I would have the skills to properly weld a filler.. Sorry.. I'm guessing I should take the mig class tough. thanks

..and to comment about "born with", I believe that practice makes perfect. You can know how to weld and never be good at it because you only do it half-ass. If you want to make a good weld and you practice enough, you will one day be able to.

most welding classes start you out w/ basics on a oxy/actlyne torch, then stick welding then mig welding. usually tig is after all that and is usually a seperate class. i would do that. learning tig will be the best experience after you learn the basics IMO. then go jump into the autobody portion if your not sure on any of that.

the best thing that any welding school or wyotech will teach you is that you know everything. Wyotech teaches that your a body man. There is no way to know everything about anything so dont think a school will answer all your problems. by no means does it mean that you've learned everything you need to know. If you plan on making a career out of this id get a job at auto body shop or somewhere were you can use your skills 8 hours a day. You will run into problems and situations that school will not teach you. dont get me wrong. Ill take a class just to have the certificate. If you have any kind of brain power you can pick up books at your local Borders or Barnes and noble that will help you in the right way. i dont know. im so anti schools and so are all the boss's ive ever had. haha

i took auto body in high school, it gave me the basics. same with the welding class tought me how to perfect my welding. didnt really teach me that i "knew it all" BUT these were local classes. the big schools prob teach that.

wow !! typical .. someone ask a question .. then you get a big debate on it..
anyways..

i agree with James and some of the rest ... take basic mig , if you can , but they might require u to take Oxy/act first... but if you find a bodywork class most time the first sememster they will teach ya basic mig first... just depends on the school....
good luck bro....

for welding fillers mig welding is the best way to go and the basics to learn. unless you want to tig weld it and by tig welding you can hammer weld tig welds...might be advanced for you to understand but mig is where to start and mostly used for fillers, that i have seen.

i took a few classes in high school. it taught me alot of the basics of welding and the basic techniques. then you really learn how to weld in the shop. the class will teach you basic safety, machine setup, and the general technique, but in the real world you won't be welding everything on a clear table with everything "perfect". that is what you learn outside the class on your own.

looks like we all took highschool welding classes lol

6 years so far
and the first time i shaved handles.. i was already a state certified welder.. and i fucked it up so bad lol

thats the best way to learn...
to fuck up as many times as it takes to get it right.. by the end .. you'll not only know how to shave door handles.. but how to fix it when you warp it to hell too
