Towing and draggin questions...ready for the project!!!

If you get a 6.5, get a 97-up. My 99 doesnt have any problems towing a 40ft gooseneck with 2 trucks on it. No cooling issues or anything. The newer ones have the factory heavy duty cooling and what not. The major bugs were worked out by then. Now, dont get me wrong, its not a powerstroke, cummins, or duramax, but its not as bad as everyone makes it out to be if you pay attention to what you buy.

^^^^ yep 97's and up had the dual t-stats and better water pumps. I think you can still go with a d-max fan on them and help it out even more.

the biggest thing they're known for is the injector pump and pmd. Have ya relocated your pmd to help make it last? I also cranked up the boost on mine from 5-7psi to 7-14psi and it was a night/day difference. It'd roast the tires with it turned up cost me about $4 to do and then a boost guage

hmm..well a 97 isnt out of the question....i would like a diesel with a 6 speed on it...i can find htem in my price range...

i have a 454 in mine and i went to gator drag and got right at 14 mpg when i tow my s-10 on a 18ft dove tail i got about 11-12 and when i towed a fullsize x cab chevy ithovered rght around 10 mpg. so not to shabby and it is easy to work on and i have done nothing to the motor at all other tha a tune up last year with new plugs and wires and fuel filter... plan on chipping it and k&n airtake

I have a 2000 454. I put a kn intake on it and lost mpg, what a waste of $200. If it gained anything it was less weight in my wallet. It does have power but still could use more. The most I have towed is a 31' 10000lb travel trailer with a quad in the bed and it tows nice. Running 19's with the 4:10's revs high though.

if get the 454 less then a diesal but lose a lil in towing its all in how u way things for and against deisal.... alle give n take..... do what makes u happy though

I bought the cooler but sold it on ebay a few weeks ago. From what I understand, the latest issue PMD is ALOT more reliable than the older ones. Mine has 160k miles on it and as far as I know, it still has the original one on it. I use diesel fuel conditioner in every tank and keep the fuel filter replaced to help maintain the injector pump. I put marine injectors in it cause i wanted the extra power and they say to change them every 100k miles. As far as boost, mine will build up to 15psi with no mods done to the turbo system. Mine must be an odd ball cause everyone says that that is higher than theirs.

how much are you looking to spend? my friend has a 98 i think 6.5 diesel on 22's just needs to be stockfloored. its on mautofied, in albequrque new mexico i think he wants 19. has the townastys in the back
