could it just be how they were made to run? i mean, back then smog wasnt exactly as strict as it is today, was it? Maybe a "performance" carb or something like that would give better tuning ability. Obviously, it's not something you want to go to right now, as your on a budget, but if it comes down to it you may have to.

Also, is there any carb shop in the area you could get it to with a trailor and a friend or something to see if they would check it out for you?

It could be that the regulations have changed. I don't know. But it won't pass the regulations set for the truck today.

The one local shop that will touch it right now, wants $400 to "possibly fix it." I could get a brand new carb for less than that. Also no trailer.

As for an aftermarket carb, I looked into that. I can get a 2 barrel Holley that will work, and probably run great, but is not CA smog legal.

He has an 81. Its a 22R. I found out that the 1980 20R cabr is totally different than the 73-79 carbs. Those differed slightly with different hose barbs, but mine is totally different than the rest. So finding a carb has been a challenge in itself, since it was only run for one year. He also drives it every day. I might try to find a different hose bard from another truck to see if I can run a really small fuel line to the carb and see if that helps at all. Or try pinching my line. Other than that, I'm really out of ideas..

let me talk to a few techs at work. since i work at toyota and there a few guys that thave been there over 20 years. let me see what i can come up with. maybe i can con one of them in rebuilding it... hahaha

I dont think pinching the hose will help. The regulator should do the same thing as you had said before. I have only worked on rx7 4 barrels so I dont have any advise. for the toy.

I know youdont have the $. I used to take rx7's to a smog place in SoCal. As long as it burned clean we would pass. They didnt do the visual part. You can tune a weber to burn clean. There has to be some smog shops up there that would pass you as long as it was burning clean.

Thats how the place I go to works. Hes pretty lenient. I could tube a Weber or Holley to pass emissions, but I can't afford one.

Seth, what Andy (ZROGRDCRLANTS) is saying is that there are two very small tubes that drop down into your carburetor might be clogged and if they are they will dump fiel into the carb at idle, i have seen it many times. I know this is not a good picture and it is not your carb but what i circled are the idle tubes and you will need to drill them out and make sure they are clean, if you need me to take a picture of some tomorrow i can, just im me.

I see what you're talking about. I cleaned mine out. I'm not havign a problem at idle. The carb throws a fine mist at idle. Its just around 2500 RPM that it happens to dump an assload of fuel. And that just so happens to be the RPM they test for smog at.
