Okay, here's the deal: My truck is a '94 Silverado 1500 with 131,800 miles...This morning while driving I see "Service Engine Soon" pop up on the gauge cluster and it stayed on about 5 mins. and then disappeared...How serious is something like this, and any explanations of what may have caused it to come on would be GREATLY appreciated?!

Hit the local autozone or advance auto parts and get them to pull the codes. They will do it for free. It's odd for it to come on and go right back off because usually it takes few starting/ running cycles for them to go off after they come on.

Split decision is right hit the local AZ.

You can then decide if it is serious (truck could let you down) or not.

But on your truck the light will only stay on while the fault is active, when all is OK the light will go out. But the code will remain stored in memory.

it has to do with your emissions so it could of been a hot o2 sensor or blocked egr that can all happen while driving and then go away after but go have it check to be safe and don't disconnect the battery until you fix the problem

I always thought service engine light meant oil changes and check engine light was a trouble code. Sorry never owned a Chevy to help more.

Also check your gas cap. sometimes if it is not tight it could turn it on. Also if it is getting old and does not seal correctly it can turn it on. That light means emissions error.

Does the oil relate to this at all because I realized it's like 6 months overdue for an oil change???

oil changes do not make your engine light come on. usually there is some kind of problem just go to autozone and get checked out

I had this happen when I got some crappy gas before. It never came back on after. Get it checked at Auto Zone for sure though.

Well, couldn't get it checked out at Advance, or Autozone, because the lil' gadget only works on '96 and NEWER vehicles...sheesh!...guess I'll just have to keep driving with it until the truck starts acting funny........
