You can do it with a paper clip!

Jumper the A&B terminals(a paper clip or a jumper wire work ok)

ALDL connector and switch the ignition into the "on" position. This is the first position before actually starting your car. DO NOT START THE CAR. You will see that in the "on" position a few lights on the instrument panel will illuminate including the "Service Engine Soon" or "Check Engine" light. (If this light is not on, you will not be able to continue and you might have a problem. Check first for a simple blown bulb. If its not the bulb than please take your car to a qualified mechanic to check it.) Ok, so if the light is on, you will see that it will start to flash. It should start with flashing a code 12 which means that the ECM is receiving information. You will see one flash, a pause, and then two flashes. This will be repeated three times. This is normal. Then, if your car has any other codes, you will see them using the same sort-of sequence. Example - a code 42 would be four flashes, a pause, and then two flashes.

check out this site for the code info...

I think autozone can only check it if its a 96 or up on chevy they have to connect it to your computer.

it's because it's not obd2... it's just ALDL... it's actually more "simple" but they don't have the connectors for it in most locations. you can check it at home as i posted above.

i got the scanner like az but mine has all the connections includin aldl

I used to work at AZ. They cannot check it unless its 96 or newer, or uses ODB2. Even then, they give a code that will help you track it down to what group is giving hte error and then it will have 3 or 4 possible fixes. However, what Jey said will work just fine.

it has to do with your emissions so it could of been a hot o2 sensor or blocked egr that can all happen while driving and then go away after but go have it check to be safe and don't disconnect the battery until you fix the problem

Do you have any recommendations on things that should be fixed immediately (serious) or what I can hold off on (not so serious) as far as emission components go?

Mine flickered on and off, had it smogged a week later, passed with flying colors. Ive heard alot of check engine light stories. And my bet is it probably nothing
