A 2.2 will "fit" in a 2.6's spot. Frames are indentical in these trucks with exception of the 4wd's. What you need is the entire motor and driveline of a 2.0/2.2. So get the motor and tranny. Not sure if driveshaft flanges match, but a driveshaft place can fit you the right flange as long as you bring it to them.
From there I'd just recommend running a Weber carb or Holley 5200 so you can ditch the computer and excess wires in the engine bay.
This is partly incorrect, there are 3 different frames made for 2wd mazdas (not including differing lengths like ext cab, short bed, long bed) The 2.2/2.0 frame is different than either of the 2.6 frames. You can change the motor mounts to put a 2.2 in a 2.6 spot, but it is a cut and weld procedure, not bolt in.
Reading further in the discussion, if you put in a carbed V8 you will need to take the high pressure pump/pickup out of the tank and switch to a carbed 2.2/2.0 fuel pickup.

You have to trim the heater duct behind the pocket. I used to do stereo install and have done a few, people are right that it doesnt look as good unless you can get it all the way back in there, butit doesnt look terrible mounted so that it sticks out the depth of the trim ring either.

Its because the 17" caddy rims BARELY fit, in fact you have to flare the bedsides slighty to get them up under the fenders, but the 18" are wider with less offset, so they would hit front and rear unless you were running 4x4 sheetmetal. With a bodydrop, the 4x4 sheetmetal doesnt even help, because the tire will hit the bedside taper at the top of the flare.
hope this helps.
