painting interior plastics

alright guys im getting ready to start prepping my interior trim for paint what i am wondering is on something that is gonna be driven would you recommend fiberglassing it or just sand it, primer it, and paint it i want it smooth like glass im gonna fiberglass the door panels and dash but im talking about the trim pieces like along the door on a civic sorry for the book

It's pretty simple. Be sure to clean it well with dawn dish soap or another non-residue cleaner. Then sand down the rough texture, pre-clean, high build primer, prep and paint. Unless the plastic is in a kick panel area or a place were people will kick or punch it, then use a flex agent with your base coat.

All hard plastics can be sanded smooth. The softer textured parts like the dash you just do like he said above except you may have to prime it numerous times to get it perfectly smooth. Prime, wet sand, and prime again. I would use a flex agent in all the base coat and make sure you use an adhesion promoter.

Adhesion promoters come in various quality styles, so use the appropriate one for the paint system you choose. I've always used bulldog, and it's relatively cheap too.

thanks for the info but what i was asking is would it be better to paint the areas like my door sills and kick panels and the trim around my rear windows than to fiberglass them

It won't make a difference really. The protection is in the clear coat.

ok thanks alot so as long as i lay down a good clear and multiple coats i wont have to worry about the paint chipping right

yeah unless you get clumsy and let a wrench and a screw driver fall out of your hand like i did :x

Don't use fiberglass unless you're shaving something on the plastic piece that can't be sanded out. You'll just make more work for yourself by useing glass instead of just sanding the plastic. The paint may peal if you don't use adhesion promotor or dont get the plastic clean enough. Amor-all and like products repel paint.
