there is no rule on that.... i usually point them to the side.... and thats called a sump....

I have always heard that the sump should point to the rear as well so that if the tank is low, the fuel will slosh to the rear of the tank on acceleration. Don't think its too big of a deal though.

what about circle track cars.... but anyways a decent cell has baffles and or foam to try to combat the sloshing.....
