NO NO NO GUYS. Most soleniods sold at parts houses are not continuous. Starter soleniods arent intended for continuos use. Better to order off of avs, sd, or fbi and know what you are getting is right.word. We use a solenoid that looks similar to that, but it's 100amp, 100% duty 12v industrial solenoid, haven't had one fail yet.

I'VE ALWAYS RUN RELAYS. NEVER HAD ANY TROUBLE OUT OF THEM. WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OR DISADVANTAGES OF RUNNING A SOLENOID INSTEAD OF A RELAY?

I have the same style solenoid on my truck and it quit on Sunday afternoon. I have been using it just over 2 years now and I got anotherone just like it from O'Reilly's. $23 and it has a lifetime warranty or you can get one for $9 and a 1 year warranty.

You can run them continously. as soon as you hit the key, one of the smaller studs should be hot, when you try to start, the right side big stud is the starter feed, it turns hot.

The FBI solenoids are actually 80 amp continuous duty, from Pollack- not the same as a Ford starter solenoid. The Ford ones will fail over time because they're only designed to run a starter motor for a few seconds, not run a compressor motor for minutes at a time.If you're looking locally, go to Riebes or Napa Auto Parts and get part number ST-87. This is a tractor solenoid that is rated for continuous duty, and you won't have to wait for someone to ship it to you. It's around $30, but if you need to get on the road it's worth the extra $$. Good luck!

its a starter relay....or similar. the way a STARTER RELAY works is that it only gets power when the ignition opens it, allowing battery power to flow through it, to the starter......cranking the truck.

not sure how that style works.

phil, i also said they were a ford style, which they are.

and i got one in a kit last yr that failed during the compressors first run. i installed a stinger to replace and not 1 problem since for the customer.

It works the same way, Grant. It just gets switched on by the pressure switch instead of the ignition switch.

dude hit up local parts place and ask for the ford solenoid. It is pretty much the same as a pac80. Or go to affordable terminal, they have the pac80 and pac200. I've been runnin the pac200 on the back of the burban for 3yrs now and it hasn't gone out yet. You can use it also for runnin multiple batteries as well.
