i think u should do a rotation, maybe work 80 hours one week then 40 the next. prevents from you getting burned out from your job, and you can still bring a little extra cash and be with your family..

go offshore, you work two weeks then you are off for two weeks. money is great and you have plenty of time to work on shit.

I had this saaame dilemma.

In 2001 I worked at an aircraft mod center in avionics. I took the job because it was comparable pay to my previous job in a 40 hr week instead of 65, which is what I was averaging. Everything was great, for 3 weeks. Then the mandatory overtime that "never happens" happened. we went to 10's, then 12's, the weekends too!

When I complained, my boss didnt understand. "the money is great" was his comment, "get it while you can". Meanwhile, I noticed that all the engineers got there 3 hours after I did, got longer lunches, and left an hour before me. They got to hang out in the AC all day too, drinking coffee while I sweated my ass off in a plane.

So I quit. My boss thought I was crazy. This was July 2001. We all know what happened in September 01. Everyone in my dept lost their job, they went back 7 years in seniority for layoffs, including my boss.

6 years later I graduated with an EE degree and an MBA, and not the stay at home and study in your pjs kind of college, real accredited programs. I got a great job making 2 1/2 times what I used to, and I started at the ground floor, it will only go up.

But by a long shot the best thing I did was not the education. Its nice to make money, dont get me wrong, I'm not an idiot. But I got to spend 6 whole years with my kids. Every summer we would go swimming every single day. On Fridays after school we went to the library and the park. I picked them up from school, taught them math and how to make dinner. That means more than any diploma. We are not well off, it required adjustement to live on just my wifes income, there were a lot of monetary things we didnt have or couldnt get.

Money is an enigma, because you just dont hear anyone ever say they have enough. But I tell you now, when your kids are all grown up, you will wish you had spent more time with them. The extra 2k a month will pale in comparison to what you would give to turn the clock back. The job I have now, I can set my own hours so that I still pick them up every day. And we still go to the library on Fridays. And now Saturday is Dadurday where we do stuff together.

Sorry for the speech.

sounds like there are some other dave ramsey listeners out there. i wish everyone on this forum would read sean and russ's posts and really take them to heart. your life will change when you have control of your money, instead of it controlling you. but more importantly, like they said, family always comes first.

The company I work for is a contractor for a major wireless company. Sometimes I get phone calls telling me I have to go out of town in 2 hours and they aren't sure for how long. Other times I am told a week in advance, however, I might be gone for several months with 3 days to go home every three weeks. I really had to sit with my wife and explain to her that this is what needed to be done to be able to support my wife and son the way I think they should be. I miss them more then I can say but I do it all for them. Look at it like that before you make you'r decision.

i deff agree with you guys! money isnt everythng! but at the same time some educations arent either...

a couple years ago i hit a slump - lost my job, my house, my car, etc. after alot of saving and money crunching i am now debt free! it rocks! i pay cash for EVERYTHING! my credit is back in gear but i choose not to have credit/debt!

i have a college degree in computers but now i do contract work for a large company with my dad. i make about the same amount of money but i get to be home around 5pm everyday. being with my kids is everything.

i have put off several things on my truck so that my kids could go to disneyworld this year.

anyway, not to ramble but my advice take the hours while you can. stock pile the cash and pay off any debt if you have any! get the money while you can because the economy is going to worsen before it gets better!

like the old saying... get it while the getting is good! (and use it to your advantage!)

When you say EE are you refering to a Electronic Engineer? If so, why type of stuff do you do exactly? Ive been thinking about this field for awhile, but im not really sure what they do. lol Im about ready to complete my AS, so i need to make a decision soon lol.
