i've been working on mine since I was 15. Yes I still live at home but my grades have been good enough in college so all of my schooling is taken care of through scholarships. Therefore, even though I am only able to work 15-20 hrs. a week, all of that can go right into spending money because I just have to handle gas money, cell phone, food, etc. What is left over goes to my truck. During the summer I work 50-60 hrs. a week and that is where most of my money comes from. It has taken me 6 years to get my truck where it is and it hasn't been easy. Any christmas or birthday you have, ask for truck parts or gift certificates to suicidedoors.com or other sites, no point in getting more clothes. Over time, the little things start to add up and saving money is always a good idea. I write down every dollar that comes and goes from my wallet you would be surprised how much money you spend that you never even realize. $2 here and there on sodas adds up to $100-$200 really quickly.

also buy a used minitruck that already has some work done. I bought my isuzu for what it would have cost in the boyds and the parts to bag it, saved a lot of money and got a really nice truck. it has needed small work but it's still better than having to start from scratch.

edit: in summary, live at home, keep the grades up, save more, spend less, learn to love $0.33 noodles

Dont start something you can't afford to finish is my best advice. I miss my truck being done more every day. If you list all the prices for parts and labor (if applicable), be ready to spend another 20% on odds and ends that add up. I just spent another $42 on a few gauge and valve fittings, an extra piece of brakeline, and some thread sealant and everything was just for better looks. Its expensive building a depreciating truck.

When I was going through college I had to sell my project at the time (the 1994 S-10 in my profile) to cover some of my student loans which sucked. I vowed to have another project after I graduated and got a decent paying job. Now that I have been out of school for 2 years and working, I have been saving up and I am finally getting my new project underway. It is top secret, but will be out at Low Rollers End of Summer Bash this year...

I also work a few jobs... I completely lack free-time, but I have been able to afford what I have done thus far to my truck. I work a 9-5 doing Graphic Design for a printing company, 6:30-11:30 M-Thursday I referee adult league hockey, I also do freelance graphic design and photography on nights and weekends.

It'll all be worth it in the end!!!!

you pay me to do shit then that builds my truck too 2 for 1.

like i said, my welder is free game for you, if you have some scrap steel and throw down on wire for it. i know a couple people around that would be down to help, just buy the parts.

if you call the bank about the loan, let me know what they say. i was under the impression a 1000 dollar loan had to be payed back quick, on somewhat high payments. I guess I have been wrong before. call the credit union and tell them its for school ....your learning something...
