Town Car, Corvette, Mustang II, to name a few, have front steer racks..

Why not just adapt one of those racks then? Am I missing a piece of the puzzle, seems like it would be alot easier then messing with all these gears and what not.

I bet he wants to use a firewall mounted rack since they are center steer and you can make the tie-rod end to the length easier than using a normal front steer rack. I am looking to do the same thing.

If that is what you are looking to do, you can just use an ol front steer rack and remove tie-rods, connect both the right and left shafts that come out of rack to each other with a tube or even flat stock. Then just drill into the flat stock for the lengths you want your tie-rods to be.

Sounds Ghetto, but FLAMING RIVER uses this design in their early T-bird Rack conversion. Here's the link: http://www.flamingriver.com/cartimages/prd_lg_361.jpg

If these two gears were touching face to face one spins left and the other spins right. If this were in a box and could go inline of the steering shaft that would be perfect.

they would have to be offset to one another to turn seperate. you place them on top of each other they just grab and turn....in the same direction. its like locking them together, unless offset.

do lawnmowers and the like not use this in their "turn on a dime" steering? Well, i mean the same concept, but part of the drivetrain section. One wheel turn in reverse, while one turns forward, or is it a differential like cars have going thru turns where the inside wheel slows or stops, to turn sharp? surely theres some sort of "tube bearing" that can switch up the direction for you.

Grant what the old tractors have is an open differential with individual wheel brakes. When you apply the brakes to one wheel, all the power transfers to the opposite side. At least this is how my grandfather explained it. And he has a '61 Ford-O-Matic.

Hey Jayson give me any info you have! I'm in need!

I found a r&p that is perfect for my strange aplication. I have a very limited space to work with and this rack is the best solution. Worst case...I have to start the search all over and find another rack.
