in an attempt to keep this at the time.... like already said phosgene gas can be made by just about anything containing chlorine.   it's simply CO (carbon monoxide) + Cl2 = COCl2   it was the first instance of chlorine used as chemical weapon in WW1. it also smells like hay but usually if you've smelt it it's too late. it can be neutralized using NaHCO3, baking soda

Great read, everyone needs to read this. Hopefully it will keep a lot of people from being seriously injured or worse.

Just piss on a towel and breath through it when welding.

omg this is a really good article.  i'm gonna have to print it out so that the place where i work can post it up for people to read,  i weld for a living and we have all kinds of chemical that we use to clean shit.  i'm a boiler maker and we make tanks and shit for almost anything.  we had to repair this one tank that was rotting away from the chemical that was in it.  but the chemical is highly dangerous,  if you come into contact with it you have 10 mins to get it off of you or you will basically start rotting to death. this one guy had it seep through his gloves and it ate his fingernails off.  but it can kill you in one hour.  its crazy whats out there.

there are alot of chemicals that can turn deadly from a welder that most people don't even realize. some don't even have to be close to the welding arc. most paints, solvents and other chemicals are considered "photochemically reactive" which means the intense U.V. light from the welding arc can turn the fumes into toxic vapors. this is why OSHA regulations for metal shops are so strict. ALL chemicals must be kept in metal cabinets away from work areas. I have gotten very sick from welding contaminated metals, but luckily never anything that serious. but that's part of the job that most people don't realize. not only is it just being able to burn 2 peices of metal together. there is alot of considerations that have to go into your material and your surroundings.

One place I was working before I opened the shop we were using the red can of CRC brake clean to clean some pipe. Well you never would think of anything especially when when it dries. But I started welding on the afor mentioned pipe and immediately lost my breath and so did the guy that was helping me. I dont know how long it took then to get the breathing back but it smelled like sour apples (of all things) and you just couldn't breath. That was about 6-7 years ago. Dont know if there is anything wrong with me still feel the same other than older and I ain't working with that shit again. Scary stuff.
