just figured I'd post a little update. just for the hell of it I threw the c10 on a friend's trailer and towed it to a local show this weekend. I was very surprised how well it did. aside from the less than exciting acceleration and the extra braking allowance it really was not bad at all. the truck barely even squatted when loaded and even the fuel mileage didn't drop much. I will not hesitate to hitch it up and pull it again if I need to.

i have a 78 c-10 and a small light weight 16 foot cartrailer i pull mine with a 2000 f250 with a v-10 and i even have troubles with the damm thing i would say that towing with just a half ton you will burn up  youre transmission within a matter of months.. the c-10s are deceptively heavy.. also i wouldnt tow anything like that without a brake control and trailer brakes.. this is how you see trucks and trailers rolled over on the hi-way...best suggestion i have for you is to put a 700r4 in the c-10 n drive the damm thing thas what i did made a huge difference.. Good Luck

nope, all stock just how I got it. the c10 has a 700r4 going in it, it's being rebuilt now. I plan on driving it when its done, but in the mean time I will tow it to a few more local shows as is. but it should be driving before slamfest, so it will most likely only be towed one more time. I just figured I would post up that it did fine without having an overly complicated towing rig. I hooked it up, turned the overdrive off and watched my mirrors. oh that's a key thing that most people forget and why they burn up transmissions, you have to turn overdrive off to tow with. that will put an excessive amount of strain on the trans and overload the engine

Trailer hitch is a must.  Bumper hitch is for small stuff not what you are doing.  Also a break controller is a must.  Just cause it worked doesnt mean it was safe or right.  A hitch is cheaper than loosing control and taking out other innocent people.
