it's actually not that bad of a truck if you fix fords F ups. EGR delete, non vvt turbo and head studs and you would be fine.

The 6.0L is not a terrible engine. It just had alot more problems than the tried and true 7.3L. So people got nervous.  The 6.0l is prone to three big problems: 1. Cracking EGR Coolers  2. Head gasket problems mainly due to early improper castings on the head bolts, plus people over ramping them with chips and tuners. 3. Early 03 - 04 models had problems with the turbos. The 6.0L factory has a VGT (Variable Geometry Turbo) The fins will adjust themselves to acheive optimum pressure regulated by the ECM. These problems are correctable.  1. Ford/Navistar has come out with an updated EGR cooler design. The cross tanks are twice as thick as the original. The replacement is not cheap, but will fix it. 2. Most later 6.0L had the updated studs. If they don't either get the Ford kit that converts the factory studs to bolts or get a kit from ARP problem solved. 3. The fins would jam due to excessive sooting and carbon. Now, diesels are oil burners yes. But, if you run good diesel fuel with a good additive and keep your filters clean. This is a non-issue.  Above all else, Don't neglect your services, Don't stack a whole bunch of chips on it, and will give you good service.  Also, Ford offers an extended warranty for any 6.0L or 6.4L that is still under 5yrs old or its first 100k miles that covers every part on the engine to 10yrs and 250k miles. Hope this helps.
