Wasnt thinking about you having steel wheels. You will definately have to notch the adapter to make the cap snap on, if it will snap in at all. The next solution is to get the caps with the beauty ring or caps that attach by the lug covers.

So just make a notch wide and deep enough for each of the tabs that clip onto the center cap? Or can I get away with just shaving the entire lip of the adapter down to make sure I have plenty of clearance?

Id take as little off the adapter as needed.

Back to the question of what it started life as, now that the original cab is gone from the frame it will be hard to tell. If it was still the original cab you could go by the 4th digit of the VIN, G would typically be what you see on a single wheel one ton (and also regular 3/4 ton, but VIN 6th digit would help decode that further, 2 for 3/4 ton, 3 for 1 ton) for 8000-9000 GVWR, H would be 9000-10000 GVWR and be a dually. Your truck is titled as a '99 due to the VIN on the cab, regardless of what frame is under it, the only time anybody might check is if for some reason it gets impounded as suspected stolen and they crawl up your ass with a microscope and want to know why the VIN's don't match...very unlikely, esp since your '99 title is free and clear.

If you can trace the owners back enough steps to when the '93 cab was still on it then the VIN would clear all that up. Mostly I figured I'd post this in case others were in the same situation of trying to figure out what the original rear end setup was.

Very informative. I work as a an estimator at a local body shop so I deal with all the VIN information and decoding all the time so those were all things I already knew. But to someone who doesnt understand VIN decoding that was very useful information. However in my case the numbers dont tell the tale of this particular truck since many parts have been changed along the way.
I have been able to trace back several owners but have never been able to find the 'original' owner who started and did most of the work that is on the truck now. I wouldnt mind getting to talk to him to maybe be able to understand more about the truck.
The hardest part in the beginning was to get a title since the person I got the truck from never even had one, only a hand written bill of sale on loose leaf paper written in red permanent marker...lol! After finally getting a physical title from the person he got it from in Georgia which was an act of congress, it ended up being a title from Tennessee and still in that owners name. I finally was able to track him down and get a duplicate title from him and got him to sign it and send it to me. When I went and tried to title it here in Louisiana after all that I found out I had to have a copy of his drivers license along with a signature from him stating that the true mileage for the truck was unknown. I havent gone back since getting all that info from him b/c it has been such a hassle so far that I decided to wait til the truck was put back together before going back. I know this is going to cost me extra money now for waiting but oh well, whats one more aggravation in this nightmare!
