Put forced induction on the 5.3L motor. That LM7 (if that's what you have) is tougher than rusty nails. and a turbo won't ruin efficiency unless you run around with your foot in it all day. That's why diesels get such good fuel economy. They gear em to turn real slow at a highway speed and then you stay out of boost, hardly use any fuel. Just gotta do the same with the LM7. Put a good size turbo on it and let her breathe. If it breaks, throw another one from a junkyard in there for $500. Run like 7-8psi. It should be good for like 450-500hp no problem, depending on what intake, heads, and exhaust you have. Find a used LS6 cam that has good lobes and throw it in there, new GM LS9 valvesprings, a set of decent lifters, if you have the money, see if you can find a set of 243s as they will flow much better and but have a higher compression ratio (can be reworked with machining) LS1tech has all that stuff in the classifieds for cheap. Look around fall/winter, guys do builds then and will throw their old parts on for cheap. I would also recommend if your budget can take it... a fast 102 truck intake. They are beasts
By the way, some later 5.3s already have the 243/799 heads on them so you might luck out. They were the higher output 5.3s and used an aluminum block. Far more of the LM7 and its flex fuel counterpart were made than any of the other 5.3s though. So it would be a pretty safe bet that you have an LM7 or an L59
