Its not that I dont like carbed motors I just like the efficiency and reliability of ls motors...or mayb ive just had bad luck with em lol

Put forced induction on the 5.3L motor. That LM7 (if that's what you have) is tougher than rusty nails. and a turbo won't ruin efficiency unless you run around with your foot in it all day. That's why diesels get such good fuel economy. They gear em to turn real slow at a highway speed and then you stay out of boost, hardly use any fuel. Just gotta do the same with the LM7. Put a good size turbo on it and let her breathe. If it breaks, throw another one from a junkyard in there for $500. Run like 7-8psi. It should be good for like 450-500hp no problem, depending on what intake, heads, and exhaust you have. Find a used LS6 cam that has good lobes and throw it in there, new GM LS9 valvesprings, a set of decent lifters, if you have the money, see if you can find a set of 243s as they will flow much better and but have a higher compression ratio (can be reworked with machining) LS1tech has all that stuff in the classifieds for cheap. Look around fall/winter, guys do builds then and will throw their old parts on for cheap. I would also recommend if your budget can take it... a fast 102 truck intake. They are beasts

By the way, some later 5.3s already have the 243/799 heads on them so you might luck out. They were the higher output 5.3s and used an aluminum block. Far more of the LM7 and its flex fuel counterpart were made than any of the other 5.3s though. So it would be a pretty safe bet that you have an LM7 or an L59

Honestly that had been my dream all along to piut a turbo on it not for racing but for more power to the wheels like a turbo diesel...local shops have been having sales wich include everything (aside from fuel mods I think) in a turbo kit to just plug tune n play...theres trucks on stock bottom end 5.3 runnin 10s all day weree im from wich is besides the point but it goes to show how goodd these motors are n how dirt cheap u can get em if yours ever fcks up...thnx for the info ryridesmotox

Yea well you can get good power from them with a good set of heads and a cam as well. But if you look at the links below they are pretty badass motors. And, for as cheap as you can get them and hang turbo(s) for like $3500 including a motor if you look hard enough. They are great ballin on a budget motors. I want to do a mid 80s Gbody with a turbo 5.3 built to rape in the 1/4. Race gas and boost it til it bends a rod then just drop a new (junkyard) short block in and carry on. It's all based on your budget. I mean leave the 317 heads on if you go turbo. use ported 243s for naturally aspirated or nitrous. the beauty about LS motors is there are parts in every corner of this country for them, in every single junkyard, and most stuff is interchangeable. Plug and play with some stuff.

These are magazine articles so take them with a grain of salt as always.

It's far behind on the other list of things I'd like to do. First is a gen4 LS block in the V, built to take abuse on the road courses here in California, then is the dually I want to get this year. I want to run a 5.3 in mine as well. I'd like to try and get a 75 and older dually so I can hold my middle finger up to the California air resource board and not have to smog it. I'll probably turbo the 5.3 in the dually as well. It will have to tow a car trailer with my Cadillac and my buddy's vette to the tracks so it will need some extra power. I'll try and source a 4L80 from a junkyard as well. A lot of the 5.3s were backed by 4l60 transmissions since they were mostly in 1/2 tons and SUVs. But the computer should control an 80 series trans just fine. And I already have HP tuners so tuning isn't an issue either. Just need time and MONEY lol
