I cant believe Im even gonna respond to this post....
First off........NOAA warned the city of New Orleans 3 days before the hurricane hit that a bouey had been destroyed by 68ft+ waves from Katrina. The city did nothing until Sunday before it struck. The reason you ask? Well because no one expected it to be that bad. Also, New Orleans was warned back in like 1929 when the city was flooded once before that if this very thing were to ever happen, this would be the outcome. One thing that alot of people dont realize is that the water not only came through some levees, but it also came over some of them. Granted there were some flaws in the leveys, and they needed to be fixed, but the city would still have been flooded in most areas. The Mayor of New Orleans didnt even declare a state of emergency until Tuesday after Katrina, so I feel that the government did the best they could. Now that they have the federal help, they are getting in there and getting shit done, right? Also one thing that has been taught to us by this hurricane is that we need a governmental way to bypass the normal checks and balances in this scenario of natural disaster.
Now about the immigrant/welfare thing. I myself live in a city where its not uncommon to see people working under the table and getting government help and we have plenty of (mostly Spanish) families living together to keep money back to send to other family members. Let me ask you this, have you ever tried to find a loophole in something to make it better for yourself? No matter if its right or wrong, it works. I know a family right now that the mom gets help for her 2 sons just as if she was single and they had no dad, but the dad lives tehre with them and supports them. Unfortunately neither has the education to get jobs over minimum wage, so this is a way to sustain life. Not the best way to live, but it works. Also, people come to the US every day to seek a better life. These people room with each other to save money to send back home to share the riches of their new life with the family. Those jobs that they do for half are the jobs that we can do, but we demand a higher rate for two reasons, 1-we have families to support, and 2-we have a lifestyle we are used to living. Also these jobs tend to be labor intensive jobs which most people are used to working for a whole lot less in other countries. For instance 6 bucks an hour is a ton better than 1.00 a day isnt it? Just think if us making $10-15 would pile in with our grandparents, parents, brothers/sisters and families, how much better off we would be? I see where people are coming from when they comment on it, but I can also see it fromt he point of view of the people doing it.
What Im trying to say is that this stuff might not be completely right, but its not totally the government's fault. There are alot of things in this country that need attention, but we are still at war and looks like we will be for at least another year or so, and maybe at the end we can look at what needs to be done to fix the system.
I struggled when I was a kid to have food and things and today I still buy my grandmothers groceries every week because they can onjly get 10 bucks a month in food stamps and their measley checks barely pay for prescriptions and bills. I dont think its right for people to cheat the system, but one day it will come back to bite them in the ass. One thing you can do if you know things like that are going on is to let your local Social Service office know, as they cant take care of welfare fraud issues. Anyhow, sorry for the book and I tried to be as unbiased as possible, because frankly, the systems is so screwed up that it dont matter if you are pink with yellow pokadots you will be able to get through some crack
Whew.....flame away.
