I hear it's about 50/50 on whether they actually destroy themselves.. they're mostly interference but only "dangerously interference" at high rpms or something.

Are our trucks interference? I should do my belt & water pump anyway, at the mileage mine has.

ugh.. started working on the problem at 10 am. put everything back together by 6. everything seems to work as it should if I pull the connector between the box and the cab. Still haven't found the short.

And now I think my head gasket is going out. =D

i thought the aternator grounded threw the casing to the mounts then threw the block which is grounded to the battery.... ????

I think the last time I counted there were 4 ground wires for the truck-body to frame, battery to body, engine to body and the alt ground to the truck via the mount. The alt is still considered the main ground for the truck and lots of folkspaint the mount etc not realizing they r causing a ground issue.BJ

I followed the ground from the battery to the body, to another spot on the body, to the engine - and at the engine it was completely soaked with oil.. one of my valve cover bolts had worked loose in the back, no good - but the continuity is fine, it's still a solid ground there. I'm thinking it's just a rubbed-through spot on a couple wires.. but can't figure out where. I'm pretty sure it's somewhere under the dash, though, because pretty much everything else has been apart.

Definitely appreciate the tips, I'm rechecking the grounds again soon as I get the chance today.

ok kinda a stupid question
do you have any after market electrinics tach,,,oil temp and volt guages,,,,stero with dimmer...if so thats where i would start looking as the all require cutting into the lighting cirut for lights????

also does this truck happen to have trailer wiring????

truck had a stereo before i bought it, the guy pulled it out. the ground for the radio is cut about a foot from where it attaches to the body, but I can't find anything to connect it to.

doesn't have trailer wiring that I can see but I did find a trailer connector in the box after I bought it. No hitch or anything, so I don't think there was wiring installed.. can't guarantee it. Doesn't look like anything was connected and then removed, either.
