Well, given the fact that the world has soldiered on for millions upon millions of years (and not just 6,000 years like many extremist judeo-christian cults in the world - and increasingly in the United States - claim), uncaring about this or that human calendar. I'm quite confident in saying, like crazymikey, that the only way the world, i.e. the human race, will end is by destroying itself through some kind of environmental collapse or another man-made catastrophe.
This whole Mayan calendar B.S. is just that... B.S. How many times has the Western world's calendar been changed or adjusted? According to the Jewish calendar or the Chinese calendar, we are in the year 3,000 or 5,000 or something like that. A calendar is just an arbitrary thing. Our calendar happens to be based on the supposed date of birth of some carpenter's son over 2,000 years ago in what is now the most politically unstable area of the world where several groups (Christians, Jews, Arabs, etc.) hate each other over... religion !!!
As the good atheist that I am, I am obliged to point out that, according to me, there is no afterlife. This current life I am living is all I get, so I am making the most of it by being a kind, moral and loving person and a contributing member of society. I am certainly not suffering through life, looking forward to the promise of a better afterlife where everything will be rosy, I will have wings or 72 virgins, or whatever it is they (Christians, Jews, Muslims, etc.) are promising these days.
So, in closing, don't worry about 2012.
