Well, given the fact that the world has soldiered on for millions upon millions of years (and not just 6,000 years like many extremist judeo-christian cults in the world - and increasingly in the United States - claim), uncaring about this or that human calendar. I'm quite confident in saying, like crazymikey, that the only way the world, i.e. the human race, will end is by destroying itself through some kind of environmental collapse or another man-made catastrophe.

This whole Mayan calendar B.S. is just that... B.S. How many times has the Western world's calendar been changed or adjusted? According to the Jewish calendar or the Chinese calendar, we are in the year 3,000 or 5,000 or something like that. A calendar is just an arbitrary thing. Our calendar happens to be based on the supposed date of birth of some carpenter's son over 2,000 years ago in what is now the most politically unstable area of the world where several groups (Christians, Jews, Arabs, etc.) hate each other over... religion !!!

As the good atheist that I am, I am obliged to point out that, according to me, there is no afterlife. This current life I am living is all I get, so I am making the most of it by being a kind, moral and loving person and a contributing member of society. I am certainly not suffering through life, looking forward to the promise of a better afterlife where everything will be rosy, I will have wings or 72 virgins, or whatever it is they (Christians, Jews, Muslims, etc.) are promising these days.

So, in closing, don't worry about 2012.

heh heh,I'm right there with ya. Heck, even if the human race ended, that may not be the end of the world...it would be an extinction of the human race, but the planet could keep on surviving. So,the planet could possibly die and just become a big hunk of matter oribiting out in space like the moon or any of the othe planets, not doing much good to anyone or anything else.

However, look at he millions of years the planet has been around and look at everything it's been through, yet it keeps coming back and renewing itself over and over again. There's a thing called evolution. You can see it from everything from microscopic beings to the entire planet itself. Things evolve with the conditions. The earth may have some non renewable resources, but what isn't non renewable is certainly renewable. However,a depleted ozone and atmosphere...that could be a different story...but that's many many years after our lifetimes.

Man,I love being an athiest and only beleiving in common sense and practicality.

Well said!!

You should check out the show Richard Dawkins made called "The Root of all Evil?" where he talks about the 3 most "popular" religions on Earth, i.e. Christianity, Judaism and Islam.

In this show he speaks to reps of all 3 religions and they all seem like crazy people to me... especially the Muslim who says that we should "fix" our women, not let them dress as whores, etc...

Dawkins likens religion to a virus that infects the young and makes their mind inflexible to accepting new worldviews or being tolerant of others.

As for the argument that religion is the only thing that makes us moral and good, there is biological and evolutionary research being done on chimps, our cousins, that demonstrate such things are bred into us, not imposed by religion. Also, I am living proof that atheists can be good and moral citizens without the club of religion hanging over our collective head. I love my wife, I love my children, I give to charity, I give back to my community, etc..., all without having to believe in a magical supreme.

I can send you the link to the show in a pm if you like.

I'm also planning on buying Dawkins' latest book called "The God Delusion" which has been a bestseller for many months now.

Cheers !!

hahaha, yeah, i think it is going to be just another day. but there is more to it than the end of the world and the mayan calander. 24 hrs a day the world is spinning on an axis and it doesn't spin in a perfect circle it is also going at an anlge. that is the best way i can describe it. well on that day it is supossed to correct its axis and it is going to wobble to obtain the correct rotation again. doing this is suposevly going to kill eveything on the planet within a split second. also, all the planets are supossed to be lining up in a straight line making some kind of magnetic pull.

or some bs like all that.

oh, and also, no one is saying the world is going to blow up or fall apart or anything. it is said that every 27000 yrs it does this and kills everything on the planet. there is a theory that this is what killed the dinosaurs and not an astroid. the world will still be here, but we won't. in theory.

according to the mayans 12-21-2012 is supossed to be a new beginning. whatever that is supossed to mean.

i don't really believe all this because like mikey said...no one can predict the end of the world. i just think it is a cool topic. we still have about 5 yrs remaining so start stacking up on the boose. haha.
