I say go with the primer. I did so that way I could do body work a little at a time cause my truck is a daily driver and I can't afford to have it down. I sprayed it with a gun and used a primer sealer. I also agree that I'd rather have the whole truck primer rather that just parts of it primered. My two cents worth.

SHINE IS FINE BUT.... FLATS WHERE IT'S AT!!

Im with Mark get all your parts up. You can shave the fenders up and never even bolt them to the truck. Then when you get all your parts up save the rest do the roll pan and paint all at once and like Roach25681 said if you paint with rattle can your gone have to sand all it off when you go to really paint the truck lots of work for nothing.

Use epoxy primer under the bodyfiller....bodyfiller sticks really good to it...and if you epoxy prime you have to shoot a regular primer over that, 1 because the epoxies for the most part are too hard when cured to sand...and 2 NO PRIMER IS UV STABLE...so this way you can keep the epoxy primer good by sacrificing a cheaper 2K primer.

As for epoxies PPG DP primers come in a number of colours, have a lot of solids so they will cover with 1 good coat, and are easy to apply and mix.

As for 2K primers, the K38 is a great high build primer, and the K36 can be mixed as either a high build or a wet on wet sealer...
