Mine is the same, smokes like a bastard too, only on cold mornings.
I do the same, start it for a sec, shut it down and wait a few seconds and start it back up, always quiet, why is this? If I leave it running it ticks for a while, what changes when you shut it off?

Mine has been ticking on startup lately and now its been real cold in the mornings and the damn thing has started puffing out blue smoke on start up. It disappears after a few seconds. Is this oil leaking by somewhere?

maybe the oil thing.. like starting it.. puts oil somewhere where it doesnt get it when off...?
