the auto tranny is definately hurting your top speed

Thanks for the posts. OK the truck is totally stock and unmolested, with AT,PS,PB Tilt, Cruise and the LE chrome package. I would like to keep it as stock looking as I can. I understand that there were actually some 2200's made(and I saw one on EBay ) with factory FI. Anyone seen or know about this system? Is it still available. A header sounds great, but we have emissions inspections every year here so would a header equipped truck pass the NOS test? A carb swap also sounds great as I know the factory carb gives problems(altho mine hasnt so far). Can you do a Weber or Holley swap change air filter, get rid of all that pollution crap and still retain a streetable ride? Finally, I am running a Flowmaster and 2.5 inch stainless pipe plus aver good low restriction air filter. If a carb swap is doable do I need to change exhaust again? Also, who kakes a good reliable ignition upgrade for the truck. Thanks for ALL your help. BJ

First off.. automatics aren't fast.. and if u start beating on it.. that tranny will most defenatly take a crap on you. With that said you can do a webber 32/36 DGEV carb swap, pacesetter headers (which will eliminate all emissions crap and the huge lump of oilly vacume lines). You won't need a new exhuast.. however i don't think you will pass your emissions test in your state.

i have a holley 5200 carb in my truck. made a big difference from the factory carb. mine is a 5spd 92. daily driven and usually has 300miles a week put on it. once you put an aftermarket carburetor on it, you can rid most of the small vacuum hoses with exception of the timing advance on the dist. for a cleaner engine bay look.

it has stock exhaust with the factory exhaust manifold, factory pre-cat right after the manifold, and an aftermarket cat in the middle followed by a dinky turbo 2 muffler. its restrictive, but it is still able to go. i usually go 80 on the interstates and has gone up to 100, but haven't tried to go faster. the truck is a 5spd

Mike and Mullet: Thanks much for the posts. In TN you have to pass emissions or u cant renew your tag so it looks like I am stuck with the stock exhaust with my Flowmaster and 2.5 stainless pipe. It did pass emissions. Do the Holleys and/or webbers come with an adaptor plate(I assume they dont bolt up to the stock intake?) and instructions? When you added your carb, did you pull the intake and polish your ports or leave them as is?Finally,I do drive the truck some, show it on weekends at Show and Shine meets so I dont need to win any drag races ( I have a Volvo S40 heavy modified for that). The AT will do just fine. Just want a little more grunt and a few extra mph. Thanks. BJ

Your truck only hits 80 wow I can get mine up to at least 90 to 100. all i did was stick a k&n in it.

Before you go spending a boatload of cash on your 2.2, do a quick compression check. My rings were toast at 80k miles. Hard to make power on low compression.

Speaking of which, the 2.2 came stock with 8.6:1 compression. That's low enough to turbocharge by today's standards. Stock output is 85 hp. After 14 years some miles, it's probably pushing all of about 60 hp to the wheels. Your truck is loaded up with options that are a sum total of 150-200 lbs heavier than most trucks. You're close to 3000 lbs + driver.

This is all exacerbated by the fact that trucks have the aerodynamics of a brick. Wind resistance at 80 MPH is all it takes to put the kibosh on forward motion.

All the mods above will help, but not make a HUGE difference.
Those guys that suggest burning the engine are not idiots. It would be sound advice if cast iron had a lower melting point. Your engine is not "perfectly good" - see above.

If you're set on sticking with the 2.2, mill your head to bring your compression up closer to 9.5:1. Swap in 4.44 gears from a 4x4. These things are cheap and easy - and should wake up your truck.

That would be fine with me, but I would haveto convince 1 wife of 45 years,4 kids and 4 soon to be 5 grandkids to come along and I dont think that would be worth having my old truck pass emissions.Lol. BJ
