I have an 84 w/ a carbed 2.0 it idles fine in the driveway but when you drive it, it sputters and backfires badly but it will still go. I was thinking fuel filter because it sat for over a year with no gas at all, and when i put gas in it maybe i stirred up the crap in the bottom of the tank?what do you guys think.

dude if it sat for over a year, you might want to spray some carb cleaner directly into the carb, change the fuel filter, might even want to pull the tank off and clean it out real good before firing it back up. also pull the plugs and clean them up, you might have got some debree on them from junk in the fuel system.

when i got my 89 from the junk yard the tank was empty and some roaches got in there and made a nest in the fuel lines. i had to take an air hose and spray them out real good. that shit was nasty. haha.

i cleaned the carb trying to get the choke to work right but it didn't help the sputtering. do you have a manual choke on your 83 if so how is it hooked up.

i have an 87 b2000 with a manual choke if its the same setup let me know and i can let yall know how its ran

no, my 83 has an electric choke but my 89 has a manual choke. there is just a cable that is hooked up to one of the butterflies and when you pull it, it opens up. pull the cable all the way out and see of your butterfly opens up. if not, that could be your problem. but usually it sputters more when idleing than driving when the choke is closed and it is cold.

also if it sat for over a year, any fuel left in the lines could have turned & when you put the new fuel in it, the gummed up residue from in the lines could have broken loose & stopped up the jets in the carb......could have also gummed up the fuel pump.....

check your dist cap bro, I had the same prob. I changed the cap, wires and it ran like a damn champ.

the distributor cap is new but i have had a lot of ignition problems in the past so im not completly ruling that out. i have an electric choke on mine to but i was thinking of converting it to manual because i have been watching the choke butterfly as it runs and it seems like about half the time it never opens. i bought a new fuel filter this moning and some lucas fuel system cleaner and im hoping its that simple

check your choke. it should be open when it is cold, as it warms up it is supposed to close. did you change the rotor when you changed the cap? still think it has something to do with the carb. like nytrdr said, check the jets, they may be clogged.

You got it backwards on the choke.
