what it this strainer filter you speak of?

Sounds like something in your gas tank is floating around and occasionally getting sucked up to the pick up tube. Then its floating away when you let it sit for a little bit.

i think your right fan......it has been running fine for a week....then today bam!!!..it did it again so instead of cranking on it i went and looked at the filter....bone dry......so i jumped up and down on the back bumper and let her sit a cpl of minutes and she has been running fine....so ill run the 1/2 tank of gas out of it and pull the tank.....never pulled a mazda tank but it shouldnt be to hard..............

Run it down to about 1/8 tank then pull the tank out without draining it. After you get it out pull the sending unit assembly off of the top of the tank. Swish the tank around with the gas that is left in it and then dump it all out into a bucket. That should get what ever is loose in their out. I would pour some more fresh gas in their and do it again just to be sure. Just becareful you dont blow anything up or set yourself on fire...

You can do it with water, but its a pain to get it all out when your done and you risk the water getting into the fuel system.

you can buy a new strainer too...also check the wiring on the pump if it has an intank pump. Mine had a broken wire on it that would tap against the other piece of wire and do a similar thing.....but also had a plugged tank strainer too
