got the 89 running again! well i got my 2.0 head installed on the 2.2 but i am haveing a small problem. she runs like crazy. it took a few runs to get her broke in and i had to adjust the dizzy but she runs great now. pics up speed so much better! the only problem is she smokes a little. i think it is because of the oil i put in. i am using 10w30 castrol syntec full synthetic oil. i think i need to drain it and use straight 30 wt for about 3000 miles. i had the wife follow me tonight and we went about 5 miles. the first half of the trip no smoke but as soon as i turned around and came back, lots of smoke. but only when i got on her. not continuous. what do you guys think???

fuel too rich? carb adjustment issue? did you just replace your piston rings? could have one or all of them in upside down or in the wrong groove? does the smoke smell like oil and its blueish or is it just black/grey smoke? or white smoke?

hey man i just had one question, why do you have so many. hahaha. just kiddin. i don't know, it was at night and my wife has no clue about this stuff, she couldn't even tell me what it smelled like. so i will have to wait until tomorrow to see.

i built the eng. about 2 yrs ago and the only reason i changed the head is due to the head over heating and warping or cracking. i didn't touch the bottom end this time just the head. i poured a die into the radiator and used a black light to see if i was getting coolant into the block, thank god, no. i am thinking maybe running to rich. i adjusted the lifters but i still hear one tapping just a little, so that could also be it. i may be getting a little blow by. not sure, i guess i will have to wait until tomorrow.

i know you said that you had gotten a new head but is it a new head or a used head, and if that is the case what was the condition of the valve stem seals, valve seats etc. also i wonder if maybe the block was warped when overheated

suprised nobody asked wtf you ran full synthetic. you realize that you only run that if the motor is either 1 brand new or 2 only takes that, now you need to fully flush the motor and replace it with normal oil, synthetic is super thin and is not made for these motors nor is it made for a lot of motors, dont know why you ran that, but i would change it quickly...

Yeah i used to have a ProbeGT, and it had only 120,000km on it..I ran Castrol Syntec and my valve seals had dried up in no time at all. Needless to say my lesson was learned.

I run Castrol full syntec on my truck, 10w30 and I have no problems! But, it was a completely rebuilt motor when I did it too...

I was always led to believe that you use regular oil for break in purposes, then after break in, you can run synthetic in any engine. As for synthetic being thinner, not true. If you are running 10W30 conventional, and you switch to 10W30 synthetic, then only real difference is that synthetic flows better, giving the illusion of being thinner, but it's still 10W30. This is why it's labelled by weight. I know where you're coming from in the seal dept. tho. If you've ran conventional for 120000km, it's best to switch to a high mileage oil instead of a synthetic. Reason being, high mileage oils have special additives that condition the seals, keeping them better as you rack up the KM's, whereas the synthetic has more additives to keep the engine cleaner. These additives will remove the years of sludge and debris left by your old oil, thus exposing the inperfections in the seals that were plugged by the reminence of the old oil.

That's just my 2 cents on the topic. Please, don't crucify me if my views conflict with others

i guess i can say thi now that mine is gone because it was a peice of shit motor. i hate mazda engines. i like the body style but the engines suck. so its probably just the engine.

what shape was the "new" head in....could be the valve stems / or seals.....also try adjusting that tick out.....if you haven't been running
synthetic, i would switch back to regular oil...glad to hear the 89 is back amongst the living!
