ok, first off i am stupid. when i put the head on i did it by the book. except for this, the only reason it smoked is because when i had the valve cover off i went ahead and poured the oil over all the valves to make sure they weren't dry when i cranked it up for the first time. so it burned off whatever was in the intake when the valve was open. it hasn't smoked at all since and she runs like a champ. i absolutely discourage the practice of dry start ups.
as for the little oil comment being fully synthetic... fully synthetic is the best oil that you can run in a motor vehicle period. unless this...you have an old engine that has been running on mineral oil all its life. you break most engines in with a straight mineral oil i.e.30wt. after the break in period, switch to what you want to run for the rest of the engines life. i chose fully synthetic because it is by far the best type of oil to run. i have been running fully synthetic for about a year and half (about 15000 miles after break in).
if you have a vehicle that has a lot of miles on it i.e. 120,000km and you switch to a fully synthetic oil than of course you are going to have problems. you just changed all the properties on those seals from something they were use to to a completely different property and they don't mix.
i went to an aviation school (a&p airframes & powerplants) after i got out of the marine corps. and they explain all the different types of oils for about 2 months in the powerplant course. most everything automotive today came from aviation. just so you know.
as for the head, it was completely rebuilt. and it has mechanical lifters. woohoo. the only thing i had to do was adjust the lifters a little and that is it. she runs better than before. the other head that i had was a p.o.s. i wouldn't mine going to the place that i got it from and burn the place down. they suck and lied about what they replace and all. i will never deal with them again. but i also, will not go burn them down. haha.
