any ideas?...

i am trying to get my 83 on the road again and i am having some issues that i can't figure out. my dad came over today and we spent about an hour and a half messing with the carb. it was running rich so we tried to adjust it. got it running real nice so i took it out for a test drive. this is what it is doing. i can crank it up and gas it and it will stay running until i let my foot off the gas. so i adjusted everything... air, fuel, and idle. still does the same thing. cranks up runs smooth then just dies. we pulled the plugs and cleaned them up real nice and put them back, still the same problem. fuel pump works, regulator show pressure, and i just gave it a new cap and rotor after i drove it last. i am at a road block. charging wise, i have installed a 105 amp 1 wire alternator and a yellow top optima battery. i also just installed my new viair 380 dual pack and have done all this since i drove it last.

any ideas? i am stumped.

does that early of a yr modle have any o2 sensors or any kind of oxygen sensors??.... what kind of exhaust does it have?

no o2 sensors, there anyway the timing has been tweaked? any slight change will make the truck run like poo. The little bolt came lose that held my dizzy to the block and it ran like shit untill I mashed the gas.

well, it isn't the dizzy. but i think it may be a float. i am about to mess with it some more and see what i can figure out.

fuel filter?

x2^^. you may be gettin fuel at times and it build up and spray all at once and then stop up again.

also make sure your pcv valve hose is on your valve and valve is workin properly. if its not then its like a huge vacuum leak right in to your intake causing your exact symptoms

pardon my forgetfullness, but is the carb stock or aftermarket.....

I'm kinda like you, check the float, also, it could be a vac leak, but mostly it sounds like the carb is loading up and when you let out of the gas that is when it dies.....good luck boss!

ok, well here is the deal. tonight i pulled it off and apart and cleaned it up real nice. there was gunk in some of the passages so i cleaned them out real well. i just inspected the float i didn't adjust it in any way. so then i put it back together and put it on. it has been idling for about 20 minutes now and seems to be fine. the only thing is that it is popping through the exhaust. now sunday night, i pulled the plugs and cleaned them up and reinstalled. i just put new wires on and put new o-rings in the dizzy a few weeks ago. so, what i can't figure out is why it is popping through the exhaust. only thing i can guess is that it is still running rich. i am only adjusting it by ear but a guy i work with races an rx7 and has a weber on it and is supossed to be bringing me some special tools to tune it. so i will see what happens next. i am going to try to drive it to work tomorrow. so we will see.
