They arent relaly dowels but yes, there are 2 round things that stick up a bit, they are hollow i think. I bought a cheap gasket kit on ebay for like 30. The head gasket looks good but all the others look like suck. Maybe your block is cracked or something. Whats the compression for each cylinder?

gonna check it this weekend or next. The truck is at our other house and its an hour away so I rarely get time to look at it. Thanks for the pics again.

I took it to a machine shop today. Pressure checking is 35 and glass or something blasting is 40. I said yes to that and decking if needed which is like 40. He was trying to push a valve job on me which is 75 but I said no cause I wanted to consult you mofos first and Im broke in the first place. So does anyone think a valve job is necessary. He said it would guarantee the valves seated properly and what not.
I stripped everything off the head before I took it there btw, so he doesnt have the valves or anything. Thanks doods

I would def spring for the valve job!

Myself not a big fan of the bead blasting....that shit gets in everywere. If it was me i would drop the bead blast and have them do the valve job instead if money is tight. The bad thing with letting them do the valve job is he will give you a call and say well the springs are bad oh ya 5 valves need to be replace oh and the seats are pitted and need replace plus the guides are bad so you need new there also and before you leave or get off the phone he would have made the commet that you know you really should replace the cam and pushrods to the tune of $350 to $500 .

Might not be that bad but when i was younger and didnt know allot about this stuff it seemed like that was what i got every time i took somthing to the machine shop....and still hear stories like that.

I had them pressure test, bead blast, and deck it for 110 after tax. I didnt go w/the valve job because I reffered back to an engine book I have and it says that all the compnents wear together and if I did a valve job, that would be more compression for the old rings to handle and they could fail.
Anybody have any good piston cleanign tips? Also, should i oiul the head down before I reinstall everything on it? Should the cam bearings get anything special before installing cam?

I got all the valves and cam and rockers in. I forgot how the cam sprocket aligns. Is it the peg lines up with the "A" on the sprocket? Also, what should I know about adjusting the rocker arms and valve lash and stuff? Thanks for any info.

edit: i just torqued the rocker arms down to 15ft lbs and the #2 intake is open a little and the #3 exhaust is open a little bit. In the block 1 is at TDC and 4 appears to be the same while 2 and 3 look to be at the bottom of the stroke. ???

I think that head has the lifters that Dont adjust? Nice looking head thow. I would atleast lap the valves or clean them real well. I have done that with a motor put new head then the next weekend pull the pistons and put new rings in

It doesnt have lifters and you dont adjust lifters anyway. I mean the rocker arm, more specifcally, the thing that comes off the end of the rocker arm for overhead cam engines. Im just wondering if all of these should be set at a certian lash with piston #1 at TDC. Some of them are a little loose and 2 of them are so tight that the valves are a little open. Thanks for the comment on how good my head is.

Well if you have a nut on top of the ROCKER arm then you can adjust it but if its smooth then it has What would be a lifter under the rocker arm to absorb the lash from the valve to the rocker arm. Yes if you bolt the cam back down then some of the valve will be open if there is no nut on the rocker bolt it down and your set!

Lifters

Does you head look like this?
