how do you convert an a.c. compressor to fill your air tank? and which compressors a better to do this with? and is there a way to have a pressure switch on the tank that kicks the compressor in and out?

First you can use either a York style or a sanden style....but either way it has to be r-12, and oil bath type. As for the pressure switch yes, you just use it to activate the clutch on the AC pump. as for modifiing it to be and Air compressor, on the yorks you have to block off an oil passage, and on the sandens they basically work as is, but I took mine apart, and tapped the o ring fittings to 3/8 npt. And a few secret internal mods to increase the airflow and reliability of it.

what type of cars do these come off of

early 80's and late 70's....the yorks are on a lot of german cars and the sandens are on the early 80's chrysler fullsize cars.

YORK! its the best bang for the buck. here is one I did a B2200 a while back.

use a sanden off of a bseries truck, you can bolt it right up and it will fill a 5 gallon tank quicker than a york.

all you need to convert it is a couple peices. an inline oiler to keep the comp. oiled, filter to keep water out of the system, and a check valve to keep the air from leaking back out. i'm going to do a tech write up on this when i put one on my 86 in a few weeks.

It is a bolt in install? I'd be curious to see that. And you say its faster? Yorks are pretty fast, i'd be curious to compair the cfm of both. I guess the only advantage to the york is no need for a inline oiler.

the factory a/c compressor on our trucks is a sanden.... this is my old truck..

i ended up selling the truck before the suspension was finished but you get the idea...
