Yeap thats the same way I pretty much did mine, Except I bolted to the truck, and welded to the inside of my gate/tag box, I had already cut most of the gate out, to have room to weld my box in anyway, and just took the latch rod off for the passenger side also...

this isn't a very hard mod at all, its actually alot simpler than I would have expectd.

looks awesome dude, I wanna do this mod as i hate the standard hinges and dont think anyone in NZ has done it yet

Does it get much sag when it is open? Like if u were to leave it open for a while would u prop it up?

Is there a reason u put the hinges so close together? or just for eas?

and possible of a photo of tail gate without hinges so i can see wat ya cut out??

cheers in advance mate

i dont have any pix of what i cut out, and im not going to take it apart at this moment, it seems to have more sag when slightly open, but it seems stronger fully open. i was trying to make sure to be able to keep the hinge behind the lip of the tailgate and where i placed them it gave me the most clearance to be able to flush the edge with the hinges. i also used the hole left behind from where the rubber stop is at the lower corner where the hinges are to run the wiring for my license plate light which is mounted on the tailgate...

the reason for the hinges being so close together, is you need them to be within the top and bottom body line, or they are going to hit on the gate before it closes.

I setup mine up twice, the first time I used only 1 hinge(bc my 2nd was slightly bent), but with only 1 hinge I got about 4 inches of sag...

So I got me a new hinge from the jy, and redid it, and now it sags maybe an inch at most, like leland said, you really only notice it when you first open or close the gate...

I think the easiest way to do it would be like leland showd, with the bolts and washers. And when you go to cut out the hole, I would take the hinge apart and just cut the hole big enough for the hinge to fit in from the inside. Then bolt the hinge to the gate, and reassemble the hinge. Set the gate up and mark where on the truck it will need to be drilled, for bolts and washers. Drill it and bolt it all up for good.

heres a pic with only the 1 hinge

I will also be using one of the stock holes for my tag light wires

yeah the only reason i cut mine bigger is there isnt enough room inisde the gate with that little stock bracing box in the lower corner of the tailgate to really be sliding your hands in and around. and i cut mine big enough to be able to put the washers in my tailgate to space the hinges to where the actual hinge parts is, where the 2 halves connect with the rods, its right up against the inner lip of the tail gate, but still between the upper and lower body lines.

just a picture of my hinge setup and quick tail gate mock up with poor hardware and several inches of sag with only the 2 bolts loosely tightened. Finished it all this afternoon but its good to have a friend hold the tail gate while your spacing it and aligning everything not to mention trying to hold the washers and put the bolts through while the gates sagging. I grabbed some cleaner looking hardware for my hinge connecting to the gate. I will also be adding a 1/2" plate on the tail gate on the outside where the bolts go through with slight oval shaped holes to further align the gate perfectly.
