Like as stated my truck is smoking but only on cold starts and while it's smoking it runs like shit and smells horrible. So what am I looking at? It is a high mile motor with over 200 k so.... Thanks in advance guys oh and it's dark smoke that fades into lighter Grey and then after like 5 min (or more the colder it is) it goes away and runs great!

Chances are, it's time for rings.

my 93 2.6l does the same--however mine has a valve that makes noise while it's cold. As long as the valve is noisy, no smoke. As soon as the valve stops making noise the smoke starts until it's warmed up. Smokes especially bad if you give it gas while it's warming up.

Do you have any noise in the valves when you start it? Might be a guide/seal in the head.

yep, no chance really. lol Ring time!

Well I thought that if it was rings that it would smoke all the time or is this just the start of a bigger problem? And on the comment about the lifter/valve tick I havemechanical valves/lifters that need adjusted bad! Would that have anything to do with this here predicament? Anyway thanks as always and if I need rings how long can I drive in it the way it sits because this is my daily.

I'm currently not using any stabilizer and I actually don't know what oil its running I have only had it for a lil while and previous owner changed it 1600 mi ago as of now... What grade/weight oil do you suggest being that I will be changing that here soon! And how hard is it to change valve seals?

valve stem seals pretty simple i was using pennzoil 10w-40 high mileage walmart is the cheapest for the 5qt jug with a extra guard filter i would also use half a quart or the full bottle of lucas depending on how bad its smoking mine would smoke when i start up when the engine was cold smoke like crazy but warmed up no smoke i started using that high mileage oil with the lucas if it were me i would try the simple stuff first

Valve stems will give you a good puff in the morning. A minute or more is the rings. Once they warm up they expand and seal the gap. Eventually it will always smoke when at high rpms then it wont stop. You can drive it awhile but the cats will plug up and you will be fouling out the spark plugs if it get too bad. My daily has 202,000 and its ready for rings as we speak. I just gotta save up some cash for the rental car so I can take it apart.
