I'm also trying the small Spectre valve over filter. It states for up to 1/2 inch, and the Mazda outlet is 14mm (9/16 inch). So I removed the rubber part and drilled it a little larger, then reinstalled it into the air cleaner and installed it onto the valve cover. I was able to still use the original clamp.

Be sure to clean off any oil from the outside of the Mazda valve cover outlet tube, so the rubber part stays on when you tighten the clamp.

By the way, this cost me $9.99 at AutoZone, and available in black, blue, and red.

I finally solved the problem, I ended up taking the carb apart and it turns out the float was set almost 15mm too high. I set it back to spec and now she fires up and runs perfectly. Its weird that it was set so far off from the factory but I guess mistakes happen. I should have taken pics for you guys so you can see how to check and adjust the float but I didn't think of it at the time, but if anyone has any questions I'd be happy to walk you through it since any instructions I could find on the internet were very vague.

Great detective work and fix, and thanks for posting.

my 32/36 is running rich, i'd be more than glad to hear about checking the float level in the carb. I'm picking up a fuel press. reg. this week and putting on it.

I have already changed plugs to NGK and new wires and checked my timing.

here's my issues:

1) truck idles decent, but if i crack the throttle open and let off it, it'll stay at a higher rpm range for longer than it should and then fall off and kill the motor.

2) while driving, when i go to shift gears, the motor revs high while shifting even with no fuel pedal pressed.

3) smell of STRONG gas out the exhaust.

It does sound like it's running rich.

Also, did you add a stronger throttle return spring? As the one in the kit is typically way too weak.

no i haven't. i bought the truck as is as far as the carb goes. any ideas where i can get a stronger throttle return spring.

I think I ran one of the v8 springs you get off the shelf in any vatozone or oreillys, I didn't see if you figured your issue out yet but I ran a brand new mechanical pump with no gauge or regulator on my 32/36 with absolutely no issues. but I did block off every port except one for the distributor, and I ran a breather filter on the valve cover.

Take the air filter and the plate under it off. Under that you'll see 6 big screws, take those out and also the c-clip on the choke linkage. The top of the carb will then come off with the float attached to it.

Then adjust the float level by bending this tab.

This is how you measure the level, those numbers are the max level and max drop. Set them to what it says in the pic.

Hope this helps

I use as throttle return spring Ace Hardware spring #99U (UPC 039008101062, 2 3/8 long x 7/16 o.d., 0.40 wire gauge).

thanks gang! looks like i'll be heading out to the carquest down the road and picking up a spring in the AM and modifying it to fit the mazda, then i'll see how it behaves and then check the float level.
