Could be that the distributor is 180 degrees out... Does it pop and backfire when you try to start it...?

Yeah man give us a little more information as to what exactly you mean when you say it wont run.....will it not even fire up? will it fire up but run like shit? Does it make funky noises? Little more info and we can give you a better idea on whats going on.

Did you put the new distributor (as stated in the op) in since the last time it was running... If so, you're probably 180 degrees out on it. I would pull the distributor, make sure you have the engine at top dead center on the compression stroke and line the distributor up where the rotor is pointing to where it would be for cylinder 1 in accordance with the cap. Also make sure that your wires are run to the proper plug locations. Mazdas fire in the order of 1-3-4-2. Now I could be slightly off with firing order since I'm doing this from memory and my book is with a friend about 3 hours away. Anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

A ur right bro firing order is 1-3-4-2 cause 1&4 and 3&2 are companion pistons and it might be that distributor that is 180 off cuz I had the same problem and I flipped it and I advanced the trimming barley and it started right up with no problem

i've been 180 on a couple of engines, including my current 2600i (after the rebuild), and putting the engine at tdc on the compression stroke, and then resetting the distributor always worked. with my 2600i i had to replace the distributor, thought i was at tdc on the comp stroke (was on the exhaust stroke), reset tdc, and reinstalled the distributor and it fired up first shot. no popping, no backfire, just purrrrfect purring of my engine...

hey alex... let me know if you changed the distributor when you did the oil pump... that could atleast help narrow down if you are out on the timing with it or not
