We bought the distributor then a new head bc the cam over heated and destroyed the head then bought the head with a new cam and rocker arms and lifters the got it back together and it started right up ran then we noticed no oil gettin to the cam so we took all the covers off then the lower pully and did all that with oil pump then got it timed like it's supposed to be then plunged the distributor with the marks lined up pointing to 1 and then tried to start it but it just turns over and coughs through the carb And don't even try

yeah most likely your 180 off on the distributor... or atleast not correctly set with the distributor... make sure you get the engine to tdc on the compression stroke, with the first spark plug pulled you can put your finger over the spark plug hole and turn the engine to get the cylinder to the top, if you feel pressure, you should be at tdc. then reinstall your distributor and see how that goes. take pictures if you can, always helps and we like lookin at them.

Ok this happened to me years back so, if I remember correctly, your symptoms are similar to mine. After asking on the forum here I ended up turning my distributor 180deg to test, and it shook like a m*fer showing that it was fine. I turned it back over, and I believe the outcome was that the distributor was one notch out and it would absolutely not run. Turned it and it fired right up. (First time since full rebuild) Hopefully this is your problem! I know what it feels like lol

you can always leave the bolt out of the dizzy hold down so that you can retard or advance it extremely. Do not drive it like this. Just hold it in place to see if it will run. If it will run at one of the extremes then its a few teeth off. Pull it out and turn a tooth or two in the correct direction and try it again.

From the Haynes manual:

Before starting installation of the Distributor, make certain the number one piston is at TDC on the compression stroke.

Align the drilled mark on the driven gear with the dimple on the Distributor housing. Insert the Distributor into the engine with the adjusting clamp centered over the hold down hole. Make sure that the gear does not turn as the Distributor is inserted.

Install the hold-down nut.
Install the Distributor cap.
Connect the wiring for the Distributor.
Install the spark plug wires.
Install the vacuum hoses.
Adjust timing as needed.
