Yes the egr effects the emissions and general running of the truck correctly.Just remove the 3 ten mm bolts, one vac line, one elec plug. Now note the metal gaskets position when removed(very important) to reinstall exact.Just clean it with toothbrush or flat head screwdriver to remove the carbon and use carb cleaner.Get it as clean as you can removing all trash inside the holes.Reinstall and done.I have used a cordless drill brush to clean it but, once done I check mine yearly to prevent issues with it sticking.Hope this answers your ?.A stuck egr can make the truck idle bad,cut off,low power etc.Ok

Without the EGR the NOx emissions are higher, and you'd likely fail such testing. I use Permatex Aviation on the metal EGR gasket if I re-use it.

I don't have emissions testing here, so I have two EGR valves, cleaned out, both open when vacuum is applied, and both close when vacuum is released, would let go cheap.

OK, assuming that ignition timing is set correctly, and that there are NO vacuum leaks. Remember: there are a lot of vacuum ports and vacuum connections on these, including one to the power brake booster, if you have that.

So what would I do next if it was mine? I'd block off the EGR valve, like make a metal block-off plate. Or use a sheet of rubberized gasket material to make a temporary block off for the EGR. Because if the EGR valve is stuck open a little, you WILL get crappy or non-existent idle, even if the vacuum to it is disconnected and EGR plugged.

it was completely clogged before i cleaned it now its running worse. might just take it to a pro and give them all my money.. i got the truck in a trade a few weeks ago i need to go through emissions so i can get it registered didn't
want to spend a 3 day weekend working on my truck.(unless i was doing something cool to it).... thanks for all the help but im done pulling my hair out.

DO NOT give up.It could be something as simple as your pre-cat convertor below the exhaust manifold is blocked up with carbon!I am thinking you have some blockage going on and years of build up in this part will choke the engine.Granted cleaning the egr was good, and made worse but, seems to point to some areas obvious to us current owners on what to do next.Tired long day so keeping short.A shop will take you for a ride fixing something simple,if you can do it yourself and learn something in the process!25 yrs with mine and still learning on fixes, and do it myself.

After i posted last night i went online and found a factory diagram for the vacuum lines i went out too check and a few fell right off and the one to my distributor wasn't even connected. I need to get a roll and start replacing lines. I'm going to pull the pre cat as well.

here is the link to the vacuum diagram

87 forever is right and if your egr was as bad as u say it was its likely that your cats clogged up to. especially if your up close to or over 150000

i got it to idle and not shut off but i had to disc the vac tube to the egr. While it was running i tried to reconect the vac line but as soon as the egr begins to open it bogs down i left it off it doesnt idle great but drove it around got it up to 60 or so pick up is good seems ok at higher rpms. could it be the timing

Just disconnect all your vac lines and plug it up ! Lol . I deleted the egr and my truck runs great . I get 80 to 90 mph . Well , Idk if that is legal in your side of the world , but in the place I reside we don't do smog tests . Haha .
