Soooo....since I put some mystery oil in the cylinders last night and with swapping the valve seals it smoked like CRAZY when I started it back up. there for a while I didnt think it was going to stop but about 7-8 minutes in it did.

I pulled the EGR valve and cleaned that out too. Is that thing really nessecary? It was clogged up really bad to the point nothing was getting through it.

So I guess the test will be after I leave it sit and see if she still smokes on start up. I am hoping the answer is no. If it still does it then this thing will find a new home since an engine rebuild is not in my future and I'm pretty sure you cant change the rings with out a complete tear down. if only it was designed like an air cooled VW.

You can change out rings (and pistons if you choose) by pulling the cylinder head and the oil pan, no need to pull the engine. I did just this (plus new connecting rod bearings) 2.25 years ago.

ok, so I went ahead and did all 4 cyclinders on the vlave seals. Got up this morning and fired it up and still have the smoking problem.

I read someplace that it can take a while to get all of the oil from doing the seal job in addition to the mystery oil in the cylinders.

I also read that a jacked up vacuume line will suck oil up past the rings on start up.

Now interesting little thing. when I first start it up and let it idle, but when I give it some gas, the smoke starts and then after running a bit its gone. When driving there is no smoke after the warm up period.

Thoughts?

Give it a couple of days to clear everything out after doing the repairs.

Mine still smokes some on startup after doing the seals but it's a good 75% less than it used to be and I know the rings, guides, and other things that used to be tight are kinda toast. But at least it's acceptable now, uses much less oil, draws WAY less attention, and will get me through until I do my swap

well, it was eating about 2 quarts a week at about 300-350 miles. I dont care if it smokes as long as it quits eating $10 a week in oil.

I still have a vibration, but it is 95% better than it was so I'm thinking it may be a motor mount that I'm not going to deal with right now, got bigger fish to fry, or more like other shit I would rather be doing besides dicking with a truck right now. its not pressing so it can wait.

Mine was using a gallon of oil every 1000 miles, now it's down to about a quart a week...which I can live with. Go to Walmart and buy their Supertech house brand. It's $12 a gallon and it's Valvoline in a Walmart bottle. I keep a gallon in the back seat of my truck and top her off once a week

What oil are you using?

If It were me (and It has been me LOTS) I would put the thickest oil I could find in there 20w50 probably. If you put 20w50 synthetic in there, it'll smoke WAY less.
zanzer   +1y
That is with 20W50

I don't buy the synthetic for this truck yet. I'll swap over to synthetic after the rebuild.

I prefer synthetic but I can't see the extra cost vs the burn-off rate. All of my other vehicles get either Supertech Synthetic (Valvoline SynPower in a Walmart bottle) or Rotella T6 if it has a turbo.

Holy back!!!

Ok well you got a serious problem then - have you done a compression or leak down ?

Maybe your oil control rings are stuck? Try sea foam and / or combustion chamber cleaner first?

Oh ya, I know all the rings are pretty much toast. I've substituted a quart of ATF for a quart of oil for the last few months, changed it often, and ran 8oz of Kreen in the oil. The inside of the engine is MUCH cleaner now. I've also ran sea foam and a mixture of B12/ATF through the intake tract to clean the valves and combustion chambers. Everything looked quite clean when I had the intake off so that did it's job. But a compression check showed all cylinders around 100 psi +/-5.

I could tell the PO wasn't exactly "sharp" and he made the comment that it may have a broken ring from what he could tell when he did the head gasket (read as - ya, it's got a broken ring). And I say he wasn't sharp because I had to pull the intake due to a small leak where he didn't clean the intake gasket off the head when he installed the new gasket after having the head off. Plus the truck was showing 102k but the speedometer cable looked like it had literally been broken for YEARS, all that was left was a rusty jagged end. So pretty much the damage was done before I got the truck and I honestly figured it only had about 1000 miles left in it before I had to either rebuild or swap. That was over 5000 miles ago The more I've tinkered with it the better it's ran so other than the small amount of start-up smoke now and the oil consumption it still runs great and averages around 22mpg. I figure if nothing else I bought some time before I need to do the swap which gives me more time to build the engine the way I want
