glad you got it figured out. i hate messin with timing but i was gonna suggest flipping it 180 degrees but you already figured it out. also there is a dimpel on the shaft of the distributor and a casting mark. if you line those two up and drop it in and let it set itself in the gears then that is exactly where it needs to be with number one cylinder tod dead center.

Glad you figuredit out. i knew it had to be something with the distributor. You should have mentioned everything you removed or did, it will take the guessing out. On the plus side i would say 80% of Mazda owners have had trouble with their timing belt and distributor replacing when they had to do a timing belt swap or what not. You are now a graduate.

thanks for the help guys and now that i got the timing figured out and the carb installed and headers installed i can now drive my truck next thing to do is notch it
