Now that I have my 4th B2200 I am getting to the point I need to fix the cold start "ticking" sound... am I wasting my time or what?

Here is the issue: When the truck is totally cold in the morning and I crank her up... i get the ticking noise... a little gas and the noise goes faster with the RPMs (leads me to think valve train) ... once it gets up to normal operating temp, she quits and its good to go for the whole day till it sits over night. It only taps when its cold. It used to be once in a while that it tapped but now its almost every morning. I am guessing its a valve or lifter.

What can I do to fix this problem? Any ideas?

My truck does the exact opposite. No noise at first but as it warms up and gets to operating temp it starts tapping or ticking. It also speeds up and down with RPMs. Its so aggravating!! It only started this after it ran hot once and cracked the head. I replaced the head and it has done it ever since. I have checked all bolts and cant figure it out...

if you are fuel injected:
actually believe it or not i'm pretty sure it is the fuel injectors! ask me how i come to this conclusion>? i didnt fill my gas tank driving the truck right down to the wire... i had to restart several times cause i would try to move and it would die. let it run for a sec then i could get it going ok. parked it in my garage and went away for the weekend, with my g/f in her car. came back to try to go to work the following week, almost forgetting that it was just about dry... it started...puttering bad for a bit, and the ticking did not go away this time... but got to a point where i could move it...and was luckily able to make it to work... late, after hitting a gas station (about 1 km away...) i could not get moving fast or it would buck. after i got gas it still ticked for a bit, and then started to quiet up and all was normal again.

keep your gas tank full for the next couple weeks and see if it does it anymore... or it could be a weaker fuel pump thing also... i'm poor i keep my truck near empty... thinking i'm hurting the gas companies by almost never filling up... just $10 at a time...lol

i thought it was the lifters...

mine was the same as urs KaoticKustomz but i was told that if you run a mazda oil filter and not a stp or fram that it would quit and i went and bout a mazda oil filter and mine has not did it since i dont know whats diff. but made mine quit

Mines carbureted and has a brand new fuel pump. I actually have a Fram filter on there now but maybe I should go grab an OEM filter....would never geuss that would make a difference though.

I am not doubting you on the Mazda oil and filter but, that sounds weird. I am running castrol 10W30 and a Fram HD filter... oh, and i am runnin a Weber 32/36... it gradually has gotten to everyday... it used to be once in a while then it got more frequent, I changed the oil and filter and she does it almost every morning now... its more irritating than anything. It goes away after about 10 min.

Only thing I can think of is... through the night, the oil settles and the pump isnt pushing oil to the lifter journals??? they get dry and make noise till the oil is warmed up and pumpin?

I know the tapping is a common issue with B22s but.. I want to solve it cuz it irritates da shit out of me!

put on a 2.0 cam and rockers noise cured

Its the lifters that make the noise, not the cam and rockers.

Actually, the noise is the hydraulic followers. There's not much that can really be done about it. If you clean and lube them, it'll help for awhile. Also, early oil changes will help too. I was changing my oil every 2 months instead of three and it helped some.
