I'm still composed. . . I almost lost it. . . but I'm still compsed. . . .

To correct this. . . it was a gallon PLUS a quart. 5 quarts.

That is ALWAYS TOO MUCH.

Hot oil expands.

And it has been done more than once with this engine in the past.

These motors do not use splash lubrication like lawn mowers.

And even lawn mowers have maximum oil level requirements.

Overfilling an engine sump is an invitation to catastrophic disaster.

----------

If you have an engine tick after storage. . .

Add 16 oz. (half of a quart) of ATF in the oil.

Maybe that will free up the sticking lifters.

But don't add ANYTHING if the sump is already FULL.

---------

To check oil level.

Before you start the vehicle for the first time after letting it sit overnight.

Open and prop hood.

Pull OIL LEVEL INDICATOR GAUGE.

It is a very simple analog indicator.

Static oil level will be shown.

Prop hood? Damn I was always skipping that part..yes my head always ends up hurting. LOL Just playin with ya.

But as he said check that thing BEFORE adding anything. He has a valid point.

i'll just call this my dooty dee doo moment. normally i do check before adding, but seeing as how it ticks, add oil, i just figured it was way low. will for sure not allow thisto happen again.

once again... it has hydrolic lifters.... which will tick even when theres enough oil.....

Speaking of quick oil change shops, I nearly had the following happen to me. . .when I worked at an Express Oil Change:

In my case, the driver was on a cell-phone and NOT paying attention.

Inadvertence can be expensive.

So can assumptions.

Money and time

Recently, I had a friend of mine give me a 19 rim with an almost new looking tire on it for a Honda CB350 I am putting back together as a project.

Once I got the wheel / tire installed on the motorcycle, the tire went flat.

I assumed that the tube had a pin hole in it.

I took the wheel back off.

Carried it to a motorcycle shop.

Removed the tube.

Checked it for leaks.

Found the leak.

In the leaky valve stem.

All it needed ultimately was the valve core loosened and tightened to re-seat it in the valve stem.

A lot of time invested in something that could have been easily fixed on the bike.

Live and learn. . . won't forget to check the simple things first.

Next time.

But in the case of overfilling a crankcase, when the engine runs long enough to froth up the oil, the oil pump won't pick it up, and the engine galls internally due to oil starvation.

And then when the mechanic takes it apart and shows the damage to the customer who has destroyed it by the overfilling, the customer USUALLY is standing there in disbelief, because. . .

"I added oil to it this morning."
