this is a question about my bagged ranger. when i bought the truck it had a homemade fuel cell using the stock fuel pump and whatnot. but that cell leaked water and kept shorting fuel pumps out. so i just put a brand new 15 gallon fuel cell in it, and installed an electric external fuel pump. the truck cranks up fine, and drives fine until i get into higher RPMs in 3rd gear, or right into 4th gear, then it starts sputtering and dies. i compared the specs of and stock fuel pump to the external fuel pump i bought.

Stock fuel pump:
-80-100 psi
-40 Gallons per hour

New Summit Racing brand external fuel pump:
-85 psi
-43 Gallons per hour

So what could be the problem? do i need to find another external fuel pump with a higher psi rating?
Thanks

stock is 80-100psi..... yours is a set 85... maybe the truck needs more psi at certin rpm ranges. buy one thats 100psi and you should be ok.

If you use a holly fuel pump with a regulator you can set it where you need it but to me that sounds more like a line leaking letting it suck air or a clogging fuel filter. put a fuel pressure gauge on it and take it for a spin watch your pressure when it starts messing up and see if it drops or stays steady if it stays steady it could be as simple as a vacuum leak if it drops then turn to the fuel system.

i thought it was air getting in at first, and is still a possibility. could it be a clogged fuel filter though? i didn't think it would be since the problem comes at the exact same time. And i dont think its a leaking line, because we didn't cut any existing lines, and i haven't seen any liquid on the ground around/under the truck anywhere. im about to go crank it up though and let it run for a while and mess around with it though

Your best bet would be to put a fuel pressure gauge on it and watch the pressure but it could be a filter ive seen them do some weird shit. I would definately check vacuum leaks though they can be a pain just get some carb and choke and hold it about 2k and spray all around the vacuum lines intake carb etc if it bogs you got a leak.

is it an automatic truck? could be the possibility that the vacuum starts to pull or deminish when its shifting to 4th gear and causing the problem? seems that if it was due to fuel pump it would do it at the same rpm regardless of the gear its in. Just trying to throw some ideas around.

no, its a 1998 Ford Ranger 2.5l 4cyl 5spd manual.

and i went and cranked the truck up earlier. It runs fine at first, but once the fuel pump gets hot (which happens after a couple minutes, it seems to run quieter and then the truck starts to sputter and dies out. So could it be the fuel pump overheating and screwing up?

BUMP???

sounds like a bad pump, how hot is the pump getting? it shouldnt get more then slightly warm

Did you use factory wiring? Some fuel pumps are only 6 volt not 12 volt you may be pushing to much voltage to it causing it to overheat.
