So you actually drilled in to the relay itself? So you have had the same problem then?

The brown cover is what I drilled the patern into. I took the cover off an drilled it then put it back on the relay, havent had an issue with it since I done it.

It's a 1991 Civic. How many miles are on the fuel pump?

AS you read through this dialogue, symptoms pointed towards the fuel pump relay. It is getting hot and shutting down. It is an electrical part.

But it drives the fuel pump. The fuel pump is failing. It is drawing too much current through the relay. The is why the relay is getting hot.

The fuel pump is maybe 20 years old. Maybe it is time to retire it.

Hmmm That is a thought. I doubt the pump has ever been changed. But wouldnt it do that all the time not just when its a certain temp or higher outside? And then when you open the doors for a few minutes it fires right up? Seems that if pump was drawing to much current through relay that it would do it all the time? Maybe it is doing it all the time but the added interior heat is enough to top it off causing it not to work?

Didn't read into the thread too much, but the relay under the dash for the efi would be worth swapping out with a new one. Sounds exactly like what was happenning on my old civic.

If you can compare the fuel pump to the squirrel cage motor that these trucks use for blower motors, you will see a similarity. 'The brushes wear out, and the resistance in the motor goes high. That makes the current run hotter, and so the relay block burns up. I know that problem has caught a lot of owners of these trucks.

They replace 3 relay blocks before they figure it out.

tweaker, your are always over analyzing things...lol Take 1 relay that's brand new pop it in and drive it for years more. I have owned over a handfull of ef's and da tegs, they both do it. they wear out just like a yota, and honda starter solenoid contacts.

i agree, reading to far into it. you'll get many years out of the 'drill out mod' on its own i bet... best part? that's free! (minus a bit of time and labor, and electricity used to charge your drill...)
