Can't believe it's been over a year since I've updated this. Shortly after my last post I killed the motor. It now has forged 8:5:1 wiseco pistons, a fresh head, arp studs, new bearings and lots of other fun stuff. I switched to a b2600 transmission too so hopefully that will hold up to the power better.

Now I'm switching to 5 lug and putting a narrowed explorer 8.8 in the rear. Ordered some raceline wheels about 3 weeks ago too. Got the front big brakes almost done and I'm starting on the rear end tonight. Hopefully this will be the last round of upgrades for the truck for a while my wallet needs a break.

Looks good! Do you have any more pictures of what you did to narrow the 8.8? Did you just section it in the middle?

I took 2 7/8" out of the axle tube on the drivers side about 8 inches from the end. I didn't take any pics during but it was pretty easy. I used several pieces of angle iron around the axle tube to keep it straight. Beveled the edges on both sides and welded it up. From the wheel mounting surfaces the explorer rear end is now 56 3/4 wide and the mazda one was 58 1/2 wide.

so did that rearend have 2 different length axles to begin with? being you just shortened the one side? how did the motor pop, with a bang or just loss of power with smoke truck still looks great!

The drivers side on the explorer 8.8's are longer so I just used 2 passenger side axles and shortened that side. I killed the motor by giving it too much timing and I broke the ring lands on 2 pistons. I was running about 12 pounds of boost and up in the 6-6500 rpm range it had a dead spot so I kept increasing the timing to see if it did anything. It did but it wasn't the result I was looking for. I think it was running out of fuel I'm still running 460cc rx7 injectors. I've kept the new motor at 8 psi until I put some bigger injectors in it.

Truck will look nice on those wheels! Nice work on the brakes and engine!
