No real tricks other than a lot of scrubbing, had good luck using Castrol SuperClean to get the grime off. Bead blasting works good but using a fine glass bead seems to leave a smooth finish, if too bad oor streaky I just paint the thing with aluminum high heat engine paint.
Yeah I have done a few of these engines over the years, probably a couple dozen at least, got one in the garage now rebuilding for a guy, hobbies (toyota's) seem to turn into after work jobs (workin on other peoples toyotas) but it helps fund more parts and pieces for my hobbies, kinda a viscious circle
As for engine paint, I have used regular body color, enamal, rattle cans of engine paint, both seemed to work fine, never tried any BC/CC or any of the epoxy/urethane paints. I was told years ago by an old bodyshop guy that using the catylized and hardened paints, that they don't hold up as well because of the hot cold cycling, the hard paints tend to crack where the unhardened paints will stretch a bit more?? no proof or documentation on that, just what I was told. Don't matter really, if ya drive them they look shitty after a short time anyways.
