I layed 20"s on bags without z'ing or modifing anything up front other than ditching the inner fenderwells. but had a fwd wheel and converted my bolt pattern to 5x4.5

After reading these posts I have gotten some different responses. One says to z the frame 3" another just under 2, and another none at all. Im confused. Do I really need to z it or not. I am going to run probably byc arms. Will those correct the z problem. Right now we took off the bump stops and coils and the skid plate is around an inch or so off the ground. The only reason I see that it doesn't lay is the lower contol arm is hitting the frame at the rear mount. After looking at byc's picture of an arm it looks like it has more clearance than the stockers. Am I right? Please Help!!!!! I don't want to order arms and still have to z it when I could just use the stock arms.

To make it lay perfectly flat your going to have to Z the frame. As far as the arms go, you can make the stock ones work with a little cutting to clear the frame in the back. As long as your sure you do just enough to clear and then replate the arms you will be ok.

Cris is right about the frame z, it's 1.75" frame "z" to lay "true frame" which means you'd be laying flat if you relocated the other crossmembers on the truck. If you are content with laying front crossmember, don't do the frame z. 18's will lay with stock upper and lower control arms. You will need to trim that section of metal on the frame, where the lower control arms hits, but it's really not that much to trim. The rear axel is also completely up to you, and what offset rims you order. If you order a rim with a 1.75" front side spacing, then the rim will fit with some minor trimmig on the wheel well. Any deeper of an offset, will require the axel to be narrowed.

I forgot to look at it last night but does the front crossmember sit lower than the frame rails? I think it does but I can't remember. If so, is that the reasoning to z the frame?

Yes, and I believe one of the engines has an oil pan that hangs lower than the others.

Whats the reason behind shortening the control arms? Is it for fender clearance or what. Does anyone make bag cups for this? and what size slam bags should we use?Sorry for all the ?'s but I have never worked on a dodge before.

The arms dont always have to be shortened, it depends on your wheels and how low your going. The thing with a Dakota is you have to tuck the wheels in past the fender humps and into the hood area. On smaller wheels this isnt a problem unless your going to drop into the doors. Im not sure about Slam Bags, I think Chris (aka bdroppeddak) was running the RS72 bags on his I have Firestone 2600s on mine. You can make your own cups pretty easy but, ive heard of some people using FS Chevy cups.

BTW Terry when are you going to put up some new pics with your new wheels on?
