Vacation is Over... an Open Letter from Michael Moore to George W. Bush
by Michael Moore

Friday, September 2nd, 2005
Dear Mr. Bush:

Any idea where all our helicopters are? It's Day 5 of Hurricane Katrina and thousands remain stranded in New Orleans and need to be airlifted. Where on earth could you have misplaced all our military choppers? Do you need help finding them? I once lost my car in a Sears parking lot. Man, was that a drag.

Also, any idea where all our national guard soldiers are? We could really use them right now for the type of thing they signed up to do like helping with national disasters. How come they weren't there to begin with?

Last Thursday I was in south Florida and sat outside while the eye of Hurricane Katrina passed over my head. It was only a Category 1 then but it was pretty nasty. Eleven people died and, as of today, there were still homes without power. That night the weatherman said this storm was on its way to New Orleans. That was Thursday! Did anybody tell you? I know you didn't want to interrupt your vacation and I know how you don't like to get bad news. Plus, you had fundraisers to go to and mothers of dead soldiers to ignore and smear. You sure showed her!

I especially like how, the day after the hurricane, instead of flying to Louisiana, you flew to San Diego to party with your business peeps. Don't let people criticize you for this -- after all, the hurricane was over and what the heck could you do, put your finger in the dike?

And don't listen to those who, in the coming days, will reveal how you specifically reduced the Army Corps of Engineers' budget for New Orleans this summer for the third year in a row. You just tell them that even if you hadn't cut the money to fix those levees, there weren't going to be any Army engineers to fix them anyway because you had a much more important construction job for them -- BUILDING DEMOCRACY IN IRAQ!

On Day 3, when you finally left your vacation home, I have to say I was moved by how you had your Air Force One pilot descend from the clouds as you flew over New Orleans so you could catch a quick look of the disaster. Hey, I know you couldn't stop and grab a bullhorn and stand on some rubble and act like a commander in chief. Been there done that.

There will be those who will try to politicize this tragedy and try to use it against you. Just have your people keep pointing that out. Respond to nothing. Even those pesky scientists who predicted this would happen because the water in the Gulf of Mexico is getting hotter and hotter making a storm like this inevitable. Ignore them and all their global warming Chicken Littles. There is nothing unusual about a hurricane that was so wide it would be like having one F-4 tornado that stretched from New York to Cleveland.

No, Mr. Bush, you just stay the course. It's not your fault that 30 percent of New Orleans lives in poverty or that tens of thousands had no transportation to get out of town. C'mon, they're black! I mean, it's not like this happened to Kennebunkport. Can you imagine leaving white people on their roofs for five days? Don't make me laugh! Race has nothing -- NOTHING -- to do with this!

You hang in there, Mr. Bush. Just try to find a few of our Army helicopters and send them there. Pretend the people of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast are near Tikrit.

Yours,

Michael Moore

the reason the aide took so long to get to New Orleans is because their mayor is an ignorant piece of shit. There are set procedures you have to go through as a mayor in a disaster area before you can start receiving aid and he just sat on his ass and complained. And who do you think a democratic mayor is going to point blame on? of course he's not going to blame the republican president (sarcasm). He should have been preparing days before the storm not days after. This whole situation is his fault and no one elses.

well we know where those military choppers are.....with our armed forces in Iraq. I can't believe you guys are sticking up for Bush. He's a politician, a crooked politician. They should pull all of our people from Iraq and bring them home to help our fellow Americans, we were supposed to hand the country back over to the Iraqi's months ago, and we are still there? This is the beginning of another great depression and you people are trying to pin the blame on a victim like the mayor of N.O. If your city was 70-80% under water, you think you would be able to go about your normal everyday life, or remember how you are supposed to handle the paperwork part of getting aid. NO. You should not be expected to, you will get on that phone and get ahold of anyone and everyone you can to save your people.

And what is the deal with people looting, raping, and killing. They lost everything but managed to hold on to their guns? That's ridiculous. Like a 3rd world country.

And you guys should watch out about talking assassination of the president anywhere. Because that can be considered conspiracy to murder and is a felony. You could end up in prison.

You know some you you guys are either to young to apreciate the situation or just not educated enough to to know what you are talking about. However you guys %100 have the wright to your opinion. You have to realize that MOST not all of the people that did not evacuate are poor black people that are in alot of the project government housing complexes in N.O. and either didn't have a car to get out or did not have money to put gas in the car to get out. What should have happend was 2 weeks ago when they saw that Katrina was going to kick their ass the state should have sent in every bus they could get their hands on and helped the people get out. This interview with the mayor of N.O.is the best interview I have ever heard a politician give. He sounded like you or me the common people. What is going on is sad but it isn't the peoples fault or George Bush's fault it is plain and simply the states fault. I am a firefighter in Bridge City Texas which is 20 min from Beaumont Tx. We are doing all we can to help these people. We have thousands of people from N.O. held up at Ford Arena. My department has donated and raised thousands of dollars. I have donated hours of my time to help out. This is the best thing that we can do right now. This is not the time to point fingers. Like I said you guys have the wright to your opinion but just think about what you are saying before you say it.

First off, if my city was under water I would not be here. Would you? So why are they there? No other reason than a free ride from the government. And your such a moron dude. Pull all the forces out of Iraq? That is not even thinkable. Why in the hell would we do that?? We have done the best thing for that country that has ever happened....Give them independance

If we were to leave there now every 3rd world country on earth would be there trying to take over. Is that what you want? The 3rd world countries to grow? Next thing you know after that they would be over here. And I damn sure hope if that ever happens they come right to your damn house and put you out on the street so you could see just how your decision to pull our troops out of Iraq worked. LMFAO People like you oughta be shipped the hell out or sent to Iraq before we pull out. So that you could get a good dose of it. People with opinions like you make me sick. Although I do not agree with everything the government does I stand behind them. We help out more people than any other country on earth and yet people still bash us. Even morons like you here at home......

Listen, its simple the mayor didn't have a plan to get people out of a flood prone area, the governor did not have a plan to do the same, when they called for help thats all they said, so now the government (quit blaming Bush, there are a bunch of people between the mayor and Bush on this command chain) has to not only figure out exactly what assets to bring in, where they are currently, pull the people together, then get them to N.O., then coordinate with people on the ground, then start action. Its so easy to sit back and Monday morning quarterback this.

To the note that we took over Iraq in 6 days, that is with DECADES of military planning on general combat and weeks of planning on the specific goal at hand.

NONE OF THE LOCAL OFFICIALS had a plan. Then for the people who say its racist the BLACK mayor purposely had white people moved out of a hotel and pushed to the front of the line in front of the thousands of people at the superdome on Friday. Not Bush, but the mayor.

Well the bus thing is a great idea but if I am not mistaken MANY MANY people have refused to leave even know the city is underwater. What do you do in that case? What does that tell ya?? They are simply looking for a free ride. Like I said many times before... Even know they are poor, dont have cars, ect they still could have left. Do they not know how to walk? Looks like they walked real good in that walmart and all those other shops where they are looting.

PLAIN FACT IS THIS: They could have left numerious times before the storm, and thousands of times after but they are still there. If you have any common sense at all that should tell ya something.

I hope you are kidding with that statement, what the fuck do you mean the Mayor shouldnt be held responsible its his god damn job to keep his shit in order and follow the correct procedures. He is the one who should have been making provisions on Thursday when they knew the strom was heading for them not our federal government. Our government only comes in after the disaster not before thats the way its been and will always be.
