It sounds like you should look at Audioque subs. They are made by Digital Designs and carry a 2-year warranty. The LW12 is only like $119. You can't find another sub with the quality of these for that price.

If you're looking to spend more than that then go with DD. They have a complete line of choices in every price range or they can custom make whatever you want.

The answer to the question depends the system. If you want to seriously compent in spl competitions then you should prolly go with a expensive high powered subwoofer that going to require a large expensive amp. If you just want some bass for your daily driver then you can get a good system from sonicelectronix.com for under $500 bucks. Here is an example.
