it is for in the summer when gas is heated from the temp. out side it expands and when it enpands it a place to go so it goes the the charcol canister wich is pictured above and then when the temp goes down or you use fuel it is put back into the tank but you can remove it and not have any problems on a s10 what you do to remove it is to unplug it and undo the fuel lines that go to it and take the one between the canister and the tank and then take the other on off the canister and put it to the tank and you should be set to go

ok i don't really understand what you said so here is a visual. Just tell me what lines to run where and whatever. Line #1 runs under the cab along with the brake lines and i'm not sure where to, line #2 runs into the top of the gas tank, and line #3 runs into the filler neck.

just fab up a bracket and move it to were it would not be in the way of anything else.that way you would not have to take the bed of if i did not work right with it off.it is a charcol canister for the emmisions

yeah what he said, just move it over and make a new bracket. "it doesnt do anthing" that isnt true, it is for emissions, but dont be like the other guy, keep and it just move it outa the way. just like the abs unit under your hood, move it behind the bumper, then you still have abs, you cant see it, and you wont have any lights on in your dash

if you dont have emissions take it off. I've had some friends that had the check engine light come on after taking it off. All I did was get 2 bolts that fit the holes in it.... I welded in the two bolts right across from where it is, onto the crossmember, right above the exhaust. I did have to get like a foot or so of tubing, which is a couple bucks. worked like a champ.

if your truck is pre '96 trash it. if it's 96 or newer, relocate it, OBD 2 vehicles will throw an engine service code and in many states will fail emissions inspections due to sensors on this box.

your truck looks like a '94 or '95 like mine so just trash it, i did mine like 4 years ago and haven't had any lights on or problems with the motor

so if i trash it do i just plug the lines and tuck em away?

relocate it under the cab...

be careful if you choose to relocate it lower than the middle of the gas tank. If you ever "tube gas" your truck (fill it all the way up till even the gas tube is full) you can make the charcoal canister siphon gas from the tank...

I know, sounds dumb, but it actually happens.

If you are OBD I like Matt says, it wont throw a trouble code and you can remove it conmpletely. But OBD II will light the SES if the evaporative system isnt complete.

No it doesnt make anything less harmful to breathe or less harmful to the atmosphere. If you ever walked by an old car in the summer, it smells faintly of gas. The charcoal canisters ONLY purpose is to take vented gas vapors and make them not smell. Thats the charcoal part. The gas vapors are stored in it till they either become liquid and are returned through the return line, or are introduced to the intake under vacuum on startup. Thats the canister part.

my truck is a 2000 model...OBDII...trashed mine and the SES light has never been on and it has passed emissions every single time since it was taken off 5 yrs ago....
